Through the case of the RepRap-based, Lego-built three-dimensional (3D) printing-milling machine, this paper sets out to discuss and illustrate two points: First, on a theoretical level, that modularity, not only in terms of development process but also of hardware components, can catalyze Commons-based peer production’s (CBPP) replication for tangible products enabling social experimentation and learning. Second, the hybrid 3D printing-milling machine demonstrates the digitization of material and the potential of digital fabrication. We show how the synergy of a globally accessible knowledge Commons as well as of the CBPP practices with digital fabrication technologies, which are advancing and becoming more and more accessible, can arguably offer the ability to think globally and produce locally.

The mufti-dimensional mega-crisis crisis includes resource depletion, waste, and pollution. Products need to be modular, durable, adaptable, repairable, recyclable, and efficient in their use of scarce resources. The old corporate model of private profit maximization encourages just the opposite.

People have very different ideas about what’s exciting. I think companies don’t give enough credit to their own people, both in terms of their ability to decide what knowledge they have and what is interesting and not interesting to them and in terms of self-regulation. A big surprise for me is that in the open-source software world, this notion of self-selection takes center stage. You find that all the work, even the dullest work, gets done in the interest of finishing the project.

"It's a physics issue. Signals in modern devices are extremely high speed; the easiest and cheapest way to combat this is to bring components closer together. For example, the wireless radios, RAM, and processor in all modern phones exist as one chip. They essentially put the CPU and wireless magic on the same silicon die (or on a separate die in the same package) and pop a RAM chip on top ("Package on Package").

Putting it Together: The Modular Car

In August 2012, ASKlabs produced a microdocumentary about the MIT Vehicle Design Summit, featuring Co-Founders Anna Jaffe (Environmental Science MIT '06) and Nii Armar (Aeronautics and Astronautics, MIT '08). Founded in 2006 with the goals of reducing waste in auto manufacturing and reducing global carbon emissions from vehicles, this dynamic MIT student group has grown to become an international design and engineering collective. To date they have built 4 prototype alternative-fuel vehicles at over 200mpge efficiency, and a vehicle intended for the Indian market that was built in Italy. The current iteration of the group is about to begin road-testing their ArchiMITes prototype vehicle which will be the basis for developing a modular car platform. The modular subsystems will be: Auxilliary Power Unit (APU)/fuel, body, dashboard, suspension, and chassis. In 2013 MIT's Vehicle Design Summit will launch their biggest initiative yet, the 10^5 Competition which will result in 100,000 permutations of vehicles that will achieve 100mpge or greater.
