Empathy, Collaborative Meaning-Making, and Co-Creating our Future

Empathy, Collaborative Meaning-Making, and Co-Creating our Future | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The good news from my perspective, is that we as humans have actually been developing effective ways to make meaning together, across a wide diversity of initial perspectives. However, many of the "social technologies" that make this possible are not yet widely known, and much less widely applied. Still, just as we already have technologies to generate power from the sun (and only need to invest in them to make them more widely available) we also already have powerful human and social technologies that are largely untapped.

'Empathic Civilization': Is It Time To Replace The American Dream?

'Empathic Civilization': Is It Time To Replace The American Dream? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For two hundred years the American Dream has served as the bedrock foundation of the American way of life. The dream, reduced to its essence, is that in America, every person has the right and opportunity to pursue his or her own individual material self interest in the marketplace, and make something of their life, or at least sacrifice so the next generation might enjoy a better life. The role of the government, in turn, is to guarantee individual freedom, assure the proper functioning of the market, protect property rights, and look out for national security. In all other matters, the government is expected to step aside so that a nation of free men and woman can pursue their individual ambitions.

Enhancing Virtues: Caring (part 2) - Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It may be that developing our capacity for empathy is the key to surviving the myriad threats of the 21st century, from war to climate change, as Jeremy Rifkin argued in his 2009 book The Empathetic Civilization[1] and Julian Savulescu and Ingmar Persson argued in their 2012 Unfit for the Future: The Need for Moral Enhancement[2]. Indeed, the growth of civilization over the last tens of thousands of years may have both both depended on, and selected for, the growth of empathy.

The science of being nice, mapped out all nice.
ORConsulting's curator insight, October 22, 2014 4:49 AM

This is a fascinating RSA animate youtube clip. It asks some very broad questions about human nature, evolution, religion and psychology, and puts forward an interesting argument for empathy as being one of our core drives.

Empathy can be a difficult concept to grasp (and even more difficult for some to enact).Maybe, if it is indeed part of our core nature, and if collectively we are able to tap into this drive more effectively, it could paint a brighter future for us as a species, and especially for our biological and ecological community on Planet Earth.

We'd really recommend taking time out of your day, perhaps over a coffee, to watch and absorb this clip, and to think about your own experience of empathy for those around you.

The empathy revolution - Eureka Street

The empathy revolution - Eureka Street | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Most of us like to see ourselves as empathetic, but what does it mean to really 'imagine oneself in another's place and understand the other's feelings, desires, ideas, and actions'? And how do we get there? 'A first step is to humanise our imaginations by developing an awareness,' writes Krznaric, as 'we all possess deep wells of pain and sorrow that we can draw on to help bridge social divides and create empathic bonds'.

Empathy, self-hood, the drive to belong, community, and hope for our planet. See this great 10 min movie

I felt particularly stirred by comparing what Jeremy Rifkin was saying with the Christian gospel. It seems to me that it is the gospel which raises the possibility of connecting the human race beyond boundaries of age, face, gender, etc. like nothing else. Such a pity that down the centuries the gospel has been so often high jacked by those who wanted it as a boundary marker for gathering people inside while keeping others out. Having just been celebrating Christmas it seems to me that the coming of God to earth in human form illustrates that God is wanting to bring about the very things Rifkin points us to.
