Digital democracy

Digital democracy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Democracy is out of step with the way the world communicates. Could open source software and a so-called parliamentary ‘cyber chamber’ help address this disconnect?

Digital democracy is upon us

Digital democracy is upon us | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

dWhen I wrote my thesis on Democracy and International Law, I stated that within the next few decades representative democracy would become obsolete because the internet would enable citizens to debate directly with each other and make decisions online.

Connecting knowledge to power: the future of digital democracy in the UK

Connecting knowledge to power: the future of digital democracy in the UK | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Since its invention, the internet has been considered a ‘game-changer’ when it comes to democracy, with a worldwide network providing the potential to create a truly participatory democracy. This has yet to happen, but numerous individuals and groups are beginning to ask what can be done to marry the internet with representative democracy, including the Speaker of the House of Commons. Here, Chris Waller and Louis Reynolds discuss an exciting new project which seeks to use a wiki approach to crowdsource a submission to the Speaker’s Commission on Digital Democracy.

Why the Digital World Is Not as Democratic as We Think

Why the Digital World Is Not as Democratic as We Think | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
We often judge the Internet based on the relatively few stories of success—where democratization seems to operate—rather than the millions of failures.

New Governments Now: Distributed Digital Democracy - Huffington Post

New Governments Now: Distributed Digital Democracy - Huffington Post | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Our current governments do not work. I'm talking broadly here, but this is no generalization. You would be hard pressed to find a government on the planet today that operates as efficiently and effectively as it should, given the collective knowledge generated by our scientific and larger academic enterprises. This is true for the decisions our governments make about economic, social, and environmental problems. To make matters worse, our government institutions do not even work for the people (which, after all, was the whole point of the democracy!).

“The Pitchforks Are Coming ... For Us Plutocrats”! This is how self-proclaimed unapologetic capitalist Nick Hanauer addressed the explosion of global economic inequality. In this rather sensational title, he wrote a warning to his fellow .01%ers that the end game is in the cards with an imminent social uprising.

Could block chains facilitate Internet-based voting? Despite early promise, there are obstacles ahead. (@windley hmm sounds a little like liquid democracy.

Let’s face it, there is a whole lot more enthusiasm for making organizations more open, dynamic, and free than there is progress. Why? Control has been the iron fist behind too many organizations for too long.

NETWORKING DEMOCRACY?

NETWORKING DEMOCRACY? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Early conceptions of digital democracy as a virtual public sphere or civic commons have been replaced by a new technological optimism for democratic renewal based upon the open and collaborative networking characteristics of social media. This article provides an introduction to a special issue of the international journal Information, Communication & Society, which attempts to present a grounded analysis of these claims drawing upon evidence-based research and analysis. A more cautious approach is suggested for the potential of social media to facilitate more participative democracy while acknowledging its disruptive value for challenging traditional interests and modes of communicative power.
