A Collaborative Economy for the Common Good | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This week, we are launching new research from Pat Conaty which explores a new economic strategy for Wales against the backdrop of uneven growth and imbalanced recovery from the downturn across the UK. The report draws on best practice and lessons from international case studies and what is currently emerging in Wales to develop the Collaborative Economy Model – an economic and regeneration strategy developed specifically for Wales.

On his first visit to the United States, Pope Francis curiously chose to spend his time in three of our largest cities--New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. As a Pope deeply concerned with social and economic inequality, perhaps this was no coincidence.

The Common Good and the anti-utilitarian... - Le Blog | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

At the core of standard economic theory is the assumption of self- interest, of rational decision making. But this is not reality. People are more complex. From this false premise standard economics has unwittingly poured a foundation from which a cultural cult of “greed is good” has risen, which harms both the individual and society. It hampers bridge building to others, to society, and the common good. Bridge Building is only possible beyond utilitarian calculation.

The philosophy of Ubuntu, underlying many African indigenous knowledge systems, enjoys growing popularity in the northern hemisphere. Helen Sayers has an extensive international professional background. After learning more about Ubuntu in order to understand the depth of its meaning through research in literature, she decided to develop contacts with people who come from Ubuntu-oriented societies or who work to promote and implement Ubuntu through their work. In that capacity, she developed methods of training and education.

Public Services: Commodity or Common Good?

Public Services: Commodity or Common Good? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In The Tragedy of the Private | The Potential of the Public, a new booklet co-published by Public Services International and the Transnational Institute, Hilary Wainwright argues that now is the time to turn back the tide of public services privatization. As local authorities around the world begin to reincorporate public services outsourced during the Reagan and Thatcher years, anti-privatization activists have an opportunity not just to accelerate the trend toward public recapture, but also to democratize public services providers from within. Written primarily for union activists, the booklet asks how public services unions can accomplish these goals in the face of opposition from powerful local, national, and international actors. The answer—drawn from real-world examples of anti-privatization campaigns in South Africa, Brazil, Greece, and elsewhere—is at once straightforward and profound: Public services unions are most likely to be successful in fighting privatization when they form meaningful, lasting alliances with the communities in which they operate.

In the wake of economic and financial meltdown politicians from all parties have been eager to offer new models of capitalism ranging from the ‘responsible’ to the ‘popular’.  As has been recently noted in the media, Catholic Social Teaching (CST) has a lot to contribute to the debate about the nature of capitalism, values and the market place.  Informed by our experiences of working with local partners and communities in the Global South, a reflection on CST principles as well as our own analysis of the current economic debate we are in the process of developing three concepts - purpose, participation and political communities - that we think need to be at the heart of any new approach to capitalism and the economy.

The Common Good and Complexity. A Pattern Language... - Le Blog

The Common Good and Complexity. A Pattern Language... - Le Blog | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Because we live in an increasingly complex multidimensional interconnected world, the economic, social, and environmental mess we are in is an intricacy of interconnected wicked problems. The characteristics of wicked problems as systems thinkers have described them are that they cannot be formulated in a definitive way because there are many different perspectives and possible narratives for a same problem. There are multiple points of intervention as problems are inter-related and can be symptoms of other problems. There are no absolute right or wrong solutions: solutions may be contrary and involve trade-offs. There is no history or proven practice and expert knowledge to refer to, data is uncertain and often missing, and the best information necessary to understand the problems is distributed in the contexts affected by it. This requires navigating diversity and complexity.

Even though the notions of common good and of general interest are considered by many to be equivalent, the two terms in fact refer to different understandings of the human condition, as well as to very different visions of society.
