'At the time of writing, WikiLeaks has published 2,325,961 diplomatic cables and other US State Department records, comprising some two billion words. This stupendous and seemingly insurmountable body of internal state literature, which if printed would amount to some 30,000 volumes, represents something new.' Julian Assange, Newsweek

Privacy vs transparency

Privacy vs transparency | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

After the Snowden affair, the rise of social media and the sharing economy, some corporations and governments would like us to believe that ‘privacy is dead’. Privacy should not and cannot be dead as that would mean that security is also dead. It is technically impossible to construct a secure information system without privacy as a precondition. And, conversely, it is impossible to guarantee privacy without security as a precondition.

WSN : Netzpolitik shows importance of free press

WSN : Netzpolitik shows importance of free press | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A functioning, unthreatened free press is a cornerstone of a functioning democracy and a non-negotiable right of its citizens. Reporting on those in power is an essential function of good journalism, and its importance is codified in the German and U.S. constitutions. Charging individual reporters with treason anywhere has an undeniably chilling effect on reporters everywhere.

Assange: the untold story of an epic struggle for justice

Assange: the untold story of an epic struggle for justice | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The siege of Knightsbridge is both an emblem of gross injustice and a gruelling farce. For three years, a police cordon around the Ecuadorean embassy in London has served no purpose other than to flaunt the power of the state. It has cost £12 million. The quarry is an Australian charged with no crime, a refugee whose only security is the room given him by a brave South American country. His "crime" is to have initiated a wave of truth-telling in an era of lies, cynicism and war.

In defence of Julian Assange

In defence of Julian Assange | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A great deal has been written recently about the frustrations ofpublishing a book with Julian Assange, mainly in a widely discussed, marathon article for the London Review of Books by Andrew O'Hagan.O'Hagan relates his experiences when working as a ghostwriter on an autobiography of the WikiLeaks leader that ended up being published in opposition to its subject's wishes. I'm the co-publisher of Assange's most recent book (Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet) and I, too, have found the experience frequently exasperating.

Julian Assange predicted bitcoin's recent rise -- and its problems -- in 2011

Julian Assange predicted bitcoin's recent rise -- and its problems -- in 2011 | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It’s been four years since the launch of bitcoin and not a day goes by that crypto-currency is not mentioned in the tech press. The buzz has gone so mainstream that I regularly field questions about bitcoin from the most non-technical people in my life, many of whom heard about it on TV or read about it in mass media. Given this, it’s hard to imagine that just two years ago Eric Schmidt, who was at the time the CEO of Google (he is currently the Executive Chairman), was barely aware of bitcoin.
