As Paulo Freire has written, “While both humanization and dehumanization are real alternatives, only the first is man’s vocation. This vocation is constantly negated. It is hindered by injustice, exploitation, oppression, and the violence of the oppressors; it is affirmed by the yearning of the oppressed for freedom and justice, and by their struggle to recover their lost humanity.

SHUT OUT BY BANKS, ABORIGINAL ENTREPRENEURS ARE PIONEERING NEW FINANCING MODEL

When I started my business I went to the bank and I got an unsecured line of credit. That was in 2001—and those days are long gone. In Battle of the Banks, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business reported that between 2000 and 2012 overall loan rejection rates have almost doubled. “The banks have no interest in financing small business unless they are 100% secured on company assets, personal insurance and guarantees,” said a Bank of Montreal client based in Saint-Laurent, Quebec. “If we are going to borrow on those terms, I might as well be the secured lender myself.”

Indigenous Economy & Ethical Work in Ecuador - Dissertation Reviews

Indigenous Economy & Ethical Work in Ecuador - Dissertation Reviews | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Drawing on a range of personal experiences and ethnographic fieldwork conducted over a number of years, Kristine Latta’s Merchant Moralities is a detailed and sympathetic account of the moral predicaments faced by Otavalo’s indigenous comerciantes/merchants. Working with Otavaleño communities, indigenous leaders, family members and friends, Latta explores life as it unfolds in and around the town itself, in family homes in the community of Peguche, and also on travels within the United States. Through careful descriptions, we learn of the particular transformations and vulnerabilities that these entrepreneurs face, as they engage in the decidedly transnational textile and tourism industries. These transformations coincide with actions elsewhere associated with a revalorization of indigeneity – both in localised spaces and particular cultural practices, and also more broadly on the national political stage. What can the distinct moral experiences of Otavalo’s merchants tell us more broadly about the dynamics of cultural change, the recalibration of tradition, and the complexities of contemporary indigenous experience? Focusing on people’s responses to shifts in priorities and contested commitments, we see how merchants articulate their own entrepreneurial values as personalised expressions of indigeneity, and do so amidst the novel opportunities and conspicuous disparities that their livelihoods create.

"the new commons movement ... risks making a similar “category mistake”  about the commons that could foster its own enclosure‐like injustices. The mistake is in believing that  the “cultural commons” is a monolithic, unitary concept for describing a set of shared resources  collectively owned by everyone."

The Power of Indigenization - MorungExpress

For indigenous peoples the power of culture stems from the saying that “I am because of who we are.” When the collective self-conscious expressions reflect the power of the will of the people, it is perhaps safe to say that the self-conscious expressions of the will of the people form an essential part of a culture. Culture as philosophy, is lived and celebrated in a society and demonstrates a peoples’ collective wisdom, history, traditions, worldviews and its capabilities and capacities in confronting issues of justice and peace.

Native American tribes adopt Bitcoin-like currency, prepare to battle US government - Breaking Deception | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

March 5, 2014 – The programmer and Native American activist Payu Harris raised a gavel Monday night and vigorously banged the bell to open trading at The Bitcoin Center, a meeting space for virtual currency geeks that looks like an empty art gallery in the middle of New York’s Financial District.  Harris was there to promote MazaCoin, a cousin of Bitcoin that is now the official currency of the seven bands that make up the Lakota nation.
