Uno dei tratti distintivi di tale evento è da sempre la promozione del “fare rete” e del reciproco arricchimento tra professionisti attraverso il mutuo confronto e il costante scambio di competenze e spunti di riflessione, perché la Giornata non è e non è mai stata un evento frontale, quanto piuttosto un’occasione di incontro da costruire tutti insieme. Nel corso degli anni in cui l’abbiamo frequentata abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di conoscere colleghi validi e di comprovata esperienza, aspiranti di belle speranze e già pieni di consapevolezza, professionisti che avevano allargato le proprie competenze ad altri ambiti trascendendo la propria figura di “traduttore puro” per esplorare con successo altri comparti del lavoro sulla lingua. Abbiamo pensato quindi di chiedere ad alcuni di questi colleghi quale fosse il libro che più aveva segnato la loro carriera e il loro modo di intendere la professione, e ne è uscito un quadro composito e interessante, che speriamo possa offrire a chi legge utili spunti per ampliare la propria visione del contesto lavorativo in cui ci muoviamo e chissà, magari, visto che siamo alla vigilia della pausa estiva, proporre anche validi consigli di lettura da inserire nella propria wishlist per le vacanze. >LEGGI TUTTO
"What did you think of the presentation?" I've used this question to start conversations with complete strangers at events hundreds of times. It's a foolproof icebreaker because most people love being asked for their opinion and will be happy to share it. The few who don't will turn the question around and ask what you thought of it. Either way, it will get the two of you talking. One caveat: Whatever you thought of the presentation, don't be too negative when you give your opinion. A mastermind group consists of like-minded people who come together to support each other in moving their businesses forward. The idea is to meet for regular, structured sessions in which each participant takes a turn at being in the limelight for an agreed period of time. When it’s your turn, you get to report on what’s happened since the last meeting, and then talk about things you’re currently working on, asking the group for feedback and ideas. La comunicación global es una clara oportunidad para los traductores y las redes sociales, es un camino al que los profesionales de la traducción deben lanzarse sin paracaídas. Todos los indicadores ponen de manifiesto que el intensivo uso de las redes sociales y las empresas no van a desaprovechar la oportunidad de meterse allí donde están los ciudadanos. Y es que las marcas buscan atraer la lealtad de los clientes y en un mundo globalizado como el actual, es vital que las empresas puedan entender aspectos culturales y lingüísticos en las diferentes regiones donde se establezcan. Por ejemplo, los mensajes publicitarios pueden ser meras traducciones pero es importante que se puedan adaptar a diferentes idiomas y culturas. Observemos como empresas globales como Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Starbucks o el FC Barcelona tienen diferentes cuentas en las redes sociales, segmentadas por países o idiomas.

Go out of your way to help clients and colleagues. Point out mistakes to potential clients in published translations courteously—but be sure to congratulate people on translations that are well done, too. Generosity sets the stage for all sorts of interesting developments: for example, consider at least three freebies you might offer potential clients when you contact them, like translating their “About us” page or bio blurb. Another idea is to tweet tips about difficulties in your field for clients or colleagues, or email them to clients.
L'hashtag non è un gioco. Offre reali benefici, infatti: chi utilizza hashtag, aziende e persone, sui social media vede in media un aumento del 50-100% di visibilità (click, retweet, commenti, ecc. da parte del pubblico di riferimento) lo afferma Stefan Schumacher nel suo articolo su PayrollBlog.
L'hashtag è un ottimo strumento per organizzare i contenuti, creare discussioni, far trovare i propri post e tweet, seguire gli eventi, farsi riconoscere, creare un legame con il proprio pubblico, ecc.

Networking like there’s no tomorrow

In the light of the upcoming Giornata del Traduttore, an event in Pisa I’m speaking at on Saturday, I thought that talking about networking would be only apt. I had the chance to go to a ton of social events over September:
– London Fashion Week
– Barbican, Hamlet
– Louis Vuitton Series 3 exhibition
– Chanel fashion night out
– BMW Series 7 launch
and at every single event, I managed to come away with a contact. Incredible, uh? (must be my cheeky cheek).I’ve started networking approximately at the end of 2011, when I moved back to London after 4 years in green Devon. In Exeter, I did network – I organised a few local pow-wow for translators and that’s where I met friends and colleagues I’m still in touch with now. But then it was when I moved that I realised I needed contacts. Initially, I opted for colleagues – so with the few I already knew, I launched the now 4-year strong London TweetUps, gatherings for linguists who want a cuppa, do some chit-chat and get to know colleagues. Yet, the seriously scary networking is the one conducted with people you don’t know and above all, outside your comfort zone and industry.
Businesspeople generally think of networking as a mutually beneficial meeting for both parties. But that’s not usually what it is. Far more often, it is one person asking the other for a favor.
I have been a management consultant, business owner and speaker for more than 12 years. Before that, I was a business executive and a trial lawyer. Along the way I have received invaluable advice from others — guidance that educated me and helped me make important professional connections. Because this advice has been such a great help to me, I believe in helping others in the same way, without expecting anything in return.
Attending a translation and interpreting industry conference is an investment in your professional and personal development. Participants come away with valuable insights into the translation and interpreting business, and often end up meeting new friends, potential clients, and collaboration partners.
Of course, traveling out of town to go to a conference does have its costs, both in money and in time, but the benefits are often well worth it. Here are four great reasons to attend an industry conference.
Purtroppo o per fortuna, non siamo e non possiamo essere isole. Anzi, la nostra categoria più che mai, per andare avanti, ha bisogno di aprirsi al mondo, di fare rete, di superare la sua orsaggine innata.
