The main difference is, of course, the technicality of the language used. Your translator is best placed to decide which category a text falls into and will charge their client accordingly; a ‘specialist’ translation attracts higher fees than a ‘general language’ translation. Texts in certain fields, such as science and the law, will almost always be categorised as specialist texts, whereas texts in other fields, such as business and commerce could fall into either category. A simple business letter would probably fall into the ‘general language’ category, whereas a company’s annual report would probably fall into the ‘specialist’ category. Similarly, where the translation of café and restaurant menus is concerned, a simple café menu would probably be classed as a general language text, whereas a restaurant menu is more likely to contain a high volume of gastronomic terms which would require the services of a specialist translator.
