The flagship of Russia’s Pacific Fleet, Varyag, and the country’s most powerful nuclear-powered battleship, Pyotr Veliky, entered the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday.

The crew of 'aircraft carrier killer' Varyag will carry out a number of tasks, some of which will be performed together with the joint group of Russian Navy ships and vessels stationed in the region, Roman Martov, press secretary for Russia’s Pacific Fleet, told Interfax news agency.

Varyag is to assume the command of Russia’s Pacific Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, replacing missile cruiser Moskva, said Interfax’s military diplomatic source. He added that there are detachments of marine units employed on ships and vessels of the Pacific Fleet, while its air force wing boasts several Ka-27 helicopters that can conduct rescue and anti-piracy operations and kill submarines.

Apart from Varyag, there are currently several Russian cruisers in the Mediterranean Sea - including missile destroyer ‘Smetlivy’ and landing craft carriers ‘Aleksandr Shabalin,’ ‘Novocherkassk,’ and ‘Minsk.’
Russia’s most powerful battleship and the flagship of the Northern Fleet, Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great), passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and anchored in the Alboran Sea on November 2.
The warship that left the Northern Fleet's main base in Severomorsk on October 22 managed to cross the northeastern Atlantic despite stormy weather conditions. The crew successfully conducted dozens of exercises, including air defense and anti-submarine training. The cruiser logged over 3,200 nautical miles during the trip.
Viktor Chirkov, admiral of the fleet, said in September that the Russia Navy is set to build its presence in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the area close to Syrian shores. It intends to increase its number of battleships in the area by up to ten.
Russia began its military build-up in the region in December 2012, establishing a constant presence in the Mediterranean Sea.

Patrick H. 's insight:

Varyag belongs to Slava-class cruisers (according to NATO classification). Completed in 1989 and operating in the Russian Pacific Ocean Fleet since 1990, it has: 16x P-1000 Vulkan anti-ship missiles, 2x RBU-6000 anti-submarine mortars, 8x8 S-300PMU Favorit (SA-N-6 Grumble) long-range surface-to-air missiles, 1x twin AK-130 130mm, 6x AK-630, 2x OSA-MA (SA-N-4 Gecko) SR SAM installations, 8x SA-N-6 Grumble.

Armor: Splinter plating.

Aircraft carried: 1 Ka-25 or Ka-27 helicopter

Apparemment, le Moskva ne devrait pas quitter la Medor pour l'instant...ce qui ferait 3 croiseurs russes en Med simultanément !

MURMANSK, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - A naval task force from Russia’s Northern Fleet is heading to the eastern Arctic, a spokesperson for the fleet said Tuesday.

The voyage is part of the Defense Ministry’s program under Russia’s Arctic policy and is designed “to uphold Russia’s status as a leading arctic power, strengthen its security... and ensure national interests,” the spokesperson said.

Led by the heavy nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky, the task force, which includes the large amphibious assault ships Olenegorsky Gornyak and Kondopoga and a variety of support vessels, has left its Severomorsk base and entered the Barents Sea, the spokesperson said.

It will take the Northern Sea Route to the Novossibirsk Islands and carry out a number training missions, as part of Russia’s plan to restore its naval presence in strategically important areas.

This is the second large-scale voyage by Northern Fleet warships to the Arctic in the past two years, the fleet’s spokesperson said, adding that last year a task force led by the Pyotr Veliky conducted a series of exercises near the Northern Sea Route.

La mission de présence en Arctique de la Task Force navale russe conduite par le Pyotr Veliky

La mission de présence en Arctique de la Task Force navale russe conduite par le Pyotr Veliky | Newsletter navale | Scoop.it

The Russian Navy’s long-distance cruise in the Subarctic along the Northern Sea Route has become a flagship mission in the region abandoned by the military after the fall of the USSR. Now the once deactivated infrastructure will resume operation.

On Saturday, Russia’s Defense Ministry officially announced return of Russia’s military to the Subarctic region. The statement was made to mark the arrival of a task group of 10 warships and support vessels to the western coast of Kotelny Island in the Novosibirsk (New Siberian Islands) Archipelago.

The task group is headed by Russia’s most powerful battleship and the flagship of the Northern Fleet, cruiser Peter the Great (Pyotr Veliky). The group is accompanied by four nuclear icebreakers facilitating the passage through areas with particularly thick ice.

“For the first time ever, all Russia’s nuclear surface ships – heavy nuclear missile cruiser Peter the Great and nuclear icebreakers Yamal, Vaigach, Taimyr and 50 Let Pobedy, were combined to perform a joint task,” Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov told journalists Friday.

The task group left the port of Severomorsk and has already covered 2,000 nautical miles, crossing the Barents, Kara and Laptev seas.

“We have come, or rather permanently returned, to where we belong, because it is originally Russian land,” said Army General Arkady Bakhin, Russia’s First Defense Minister.

On Saturday Commander Chirkov told reporters that another group of vessels belonging to the hydrographic service of the Northern Fleet has reached the northernmost coast of the Rudolf Island in the Frantz Josef Land Archipelago and landed there. Later, this group of ships is also expected to call on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago.

“The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation will fully implement the task of permanent military presence in the Arctic to secure the legal access of the country to resources and spaces of this region. This will be a constant presence,” Chirkov said.

For Russia, this is only the beginning of improvement of the entire route of the Northern Sea Route and the adjacent Arctic zone, Bakhin said. Even though the task is immense, Russia has the equipment and trained personnel to attain its goals in the Arctic, he said.

Bakhin said that Temp military airfield on Kotelny Island that was inactive for over 20 years will become operable in October, as An-72 and An-74 cargo planes will land there, bringing instruments and supplies for the reactivated Air Force base. In the near future the airstrip will be modified to be able to receive heavy cargo planes such as Il-76 and An-22 Antey military jumbos. This will speed up reestablishing Russia’s military presence in the Arctic region, as the air connection will be regular, all-weather and all year around.

The Temp military airfield will become the Russian Air Force’s main logistical hub in the region and will be thoroughly modernized, Bakhin said. In the first place this means using special material for the airstrip that will have to withstand most severe conditions and extremely low temperatures of the polar waters.

“We must reestablish Arctic aviation and infrastructure, both on the mainland and the islands,” Bakhin said.

In 2012, the Peter the Great cruiser, with a group of Russia’s Northern Fleet battleships, visited these waters and performed its first beach landing on Kotelny Island.
