SpaceX Starhopper Launches - 150 Meter Flight Test is Successful

This afternoon and after a bunch of delays and a failed attempt at the launch yesterday due to an issue with the igniters SpaceX Starhopper Launches and took to the skies with its second and final untethered flight for this test vessel. The target flight for this was 150 meters in altitude which was revised down from 200 meters before today's flight. The reason for this seems to be due to regulatory approvals being more difficult above the 150 meter mark but that is possibly a little bit of speculation at this point. The starhopper itself is roughly 20 meters in height so we were expecting the view of the Starhopper hovering up around seven to eight times its own height before slowly coming back to gently touch down. From these shots it does certainly look like the target altitude there was reached successfully. The 150 Meter Flight Test is Successful! Here is my take on this amazing achievement. Congratulations SpaceX!

SpaceX Starship Nearing Completion

SpaceX is nearing to completion on first two orbital Starship prototypes which should fly for the first time later this year, first to 5000m and if Elon musk can secure permits from FAA for high altitude tests could be performed in late 2019, perhaps just before Christmas or early in 2020, depending how success of earlier flights. Starhopper should perform its first proper 200m test flight. this could happen on Monday or more likely Tuesday.  I'll be making a video about it, so make sure you tune in. I'll try to live stream the event if Spacex allows for live stream and hold a chat with you all during the event. Bare in mind I live in London, so if the event is really late at night, I'll probably hit the sack, but let live stream continue on.

What is Starhopper? | Why Build it? | SpaceX's Approach to Space Technology | TIS Clip

Here's a clip from episode 162 of the podcast where we did a launch hangout for SpaceX's Starhopper test to 150m. This was recorded on the first attempt, on August 26th, 2019 which was scrubbed 24 hours.

There was some solid space talk in there about what starhopper is and why SpaceX would want to build a water tower with rockets on it?

I've seen these questions pop up a lot, and heard a few other science communicators talk about this and I wanted to put a clip out on this for anyone searching for it as well.

SpaceX Starhopper Lift Off - 20 Meter Flight Test Successful

What an amazing few days it has been. SpaceX Starhopper Lift Off with a 20 Meter Flight Test Successful! We also saw an interesting attempt at the same mission yesterday which has some nice footage included in this video. On top of all this we also had the incredible CRS-18 mission to the Space station which has launched beautifully with the booster of course making its way back to the landing site to touch down. There are of course a large number of fans out there super eager to cheer SpaceX on and celebrate all they’ve achieved over the last year or so but there is a heck of a lot of people trying to discredit projects such as Starhopper and the Starship prototypes. None of these people of course seem to comprehend how amazing all this is. The fact that SpaceX release all this test footage is just something that people are very unused to seeing. The general public just don’t seem to appreciate that failure and rapid prototypes are a great thing. Lets explore this topic in more detail shall we.
