is your next business model a platform?

This great blog post captured by curator Robin Good talks about platforms and the gang of four (Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook).

"Today’s dizzying pace of change shows no signs of abating. If anything, it is likely to accelerate. So do everything you can to heed these lessons today, to be as prepared as possible for a vastly different tomorrow."

The ten lessons identified remind me also of the work of Rita McGrath (End of Competitive Advantage) who talks about six key areas in what she calls "The New Strategy Playbook":

1. Continuous Reconfiguration
2. Healthy Disengagement
3. Deft Resource Allocation
4. Innovation Proficiency
5. Discovery Driven Mindset

Facebook Launches Global Pages for Brands

Facebook Launches Global Pages for Brands | Digital-News on Scoop.it today | Scoop.it

What is Global Pages?

Global Pages is a streamlined solution to create a better experience for global businesses and their community on Facebook. Essentially, it creates a central hub, allowing brands to have one global brand identity. Brands will be able to customize their Page’s look and feel for each country or geographic region, while maintaining global metrics such as Likes, People Talking About This, and check-ins.

How It Works

Instead of the current multi-page model in which brands have created their own localized solution, they will now have the ability to create local country-specific or regional versions of their pages that will sit within one central hub on Facebook, following a unified naming convention.

Brands that follow a Global page model will have the opportunity to localize the following features:

Cover Photos Profile Photo Tab Structure Photos Access to local Facebook Insights data Brand Mailbox Vanity URL Milestones About Section

What Does This Mean For Brands?

News Discovery Tools: Get The Fastest Spreading News with NewsWhip

News Discovery Tools: Get The Fastest Spreading News with NewsWhip | Digital-News on Scoop.it today | Scoop.it

Robin Good: NewsWhip is a news discovery service that specializes in bringing you only the fastest spreading news stories on Facebook and Twitter.

The news are organized by main geographical areas and by broad key topics, from which you can select your preferred ones.

From the official site: "NewsWhip's technology tracks all the news published by about 5,000 English-language sources –about 60,000 news stories each day. It gathers social data for each story – how many shares, likes, tweets and comments it has – at repeated intervals, building a live picture of how popular it is, right now. With this information, it calculates a social speed at which each story is travelling. The process is unique, new, and patent pending."

My comments: If you are looking to pick up "trendy" stories across the board or on specific general interest areas NewsWhip may be a great companion. Disappointing if you are looking for quality, in-depth stories in specific niche areas.

Also of interest two tools the company is offering to web publishers:

1) Spike - makes it easy to catch stries that are starting to trend

2) Social Amplifier - exposes your most valuable articles by leveraging your readers preferences via Facebook and Twitter

Why Sales on Social Media Will Be Huge By 2015 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Why Sales on Social Media Will Be Huge By 2015 [INFOGRAPHIC] | Digital-News on Scoop.it today | Scoop.it

Shopping on social media may not be big right now, but by 2015, it's expected to explode...

A new infographic by has found that “social commerce sales are expected to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half of web sales to occur through social media,” writes Samantha Murphy of Mashable. Currently, one in three small businesses use Facebook, while there are over 42 million fan pages on Facebook. Seventeen percent of those sell products on the pages.

Facebook fans are 79 percent more likely than a non-fan to purchase a product, and 74 percent of fans are more likely to recommend a company or product. The social media site also drives 26 percent of referral traffic to company websites. Right now ”20 percent of shoppers prefer to purchase products via Facebook than the brand’s website”— and that number is expected to climb.

Top Tech Trends & People of 2012 (Focus on New Media Communications)

Here is the textbook that I created/curated for teaching my New Media Technology class during the Spring semester of 2012 at Hannam University's Linton Global College. I took great effort to give credit where it is due. I aimed to show my students how they could access enough free info on the web that was of equal or greater value than the wonderful information found in expensive textbooks. Feel free to share and please support the true authors of this book in any way you can (money, likes, blog comments, links, etc.) I am simply the currator of this content.

If you would like a free tablet-friendly PDF file, just email me at kenmorrison30 @ yahoo.com (no spaces)

P.S. There are some typos and honest mistakes in this textbook, but I am comfortable sharing it as is. I am excited to redesign it for next semester.

Ken
