In Besançon in the east of France, the top boys' names ewre Jules, Lucas and Léo, and the top girls' names were Manon, Jade, Chloé and Léa. As always, the story reports a "return to traditional names" such as Paul, Louise, Michelle, Marcel, André, Pascal, Denis, Anne, Fernand, Gustave, Gaston and Pierrot. There were also spelling variations, names that sounds like film stars, Italian names, German names, interesting double-barrels, hero names, delightful nature names (Pimprenelle and Pétunia - I do hope those were twins!), the intriguing Ntxhee, and the acceptance at last of Princesse-Rebecca, which had previously been refused by the authorities.

Pumuckl is the little children's character pictured. This article is about some of the unusual names given to children in Austria in recent years, like Cloud, Demokrat, Milka (a very tasty chocolate brand) and Marvellous. Naming laws in Austria are less stringent than in Germany: registrars must check that the name has been used before, but it could be anywhere, not just German-speaking places. The gender of the name must also match the sex of the child, with a few established exceptions, like Andrea.

There was a baby boom in Saxony (a region of Germany) in 2015. This article is packed with some of the most unusual choices, including: Cataleya, Elly Fee, Serafina Elfriede, Alyson Aubery, Estelle Summer, Leni-Melody, Holli Hilda, Ylvie, Liam Jermaine, Novalee, Framo (a wonderful smoosh of Franz and Mohammed), Suri, Lou, Taliko, Sasou, Esma, Maxwell, Siggi, Freddi, Miron and Mylo. Pumuckl, Tarzan and Schneewittchen (Sleeping Beauty) were rejected this year. As in the English-speaking world, the pool of names continues to grow each year, and the proportion of children with the most popular names grows less.
