Grappling With My Family’s Identity in a Post-‘Brexit’ Europe

Grappling With My Family’s Identity in a Post-‘Brexit’ Europe | Name News | Scoop.it
I now find myself wishing that I had given my children my last name as well. A double surname would have been unwieldy, but it would have been European instead of just British — and it would have signaled a connection to me.

Monthly topic: Why did medieval people choose the names they did?

This is what makes the Polyptyque d’Irminon such an amazing resource. The document was compiled around 823 by Irminon, abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and was a catalogue of the lands owned by the abbey between the rivers Seine and Eure. As part of the catalogue, the names of the tenants are recorded — and not only the tenants, but also the names of their wives, and their children.
Clare's insight:

This source sounds brilliant. Thank goodness for Irminon.

Monthly topic: Some more 9th C families

over the weekend we picked up a new source roughly contemporary to the Irminon polyptyque which has similar sorts of data. This source is a listing of tenant farmers in lands held by the Abbey of St. Victor, in Marseille, compiled in 814, and contains not only the names of parents and children, but often, also (fascinatingly!) their ages!
Clare's insight:

Seeing the children's ages makes them seem more like people, not just a list of names. Imagine 4-year-old twin girls Aprilis and Stephania, or 8-year-old Petrus and his little sisters Martina and Dominica. (Martina looks like a diminutive of their mother's name, Marta.) I hope we see more of these!
