University World News
Massive open online courses, or MOOCs, took the world by storm in 2012.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

What's the future for MOOCs?  What are we learning from them. Since 2012 institutions have had access to data - this data has the potential to transform how we teach.  By using this data effectively we will be able to better support our on campus students.  That is what this article is proposing.

MOOCs: Too Much Hype or Not Enough? - Pearson Research & Innovation Network

MOOCs: Too Much Hype or Not Enough? - Pearson Research & Innovation Network | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Are MOOCs over-hyped and dying?
Fiona Harvey's insight:

I scooped this one because I am running a workshop with a group from Saudi Arabia.  However, I have already been told that MOOCs are not that popular in KSA, and it appears that this conference also played them down.  As an aside, the hype came from media and commentators who I think, didn't really understand online learning.

The idea that you can give away content and learning for free isn't going away.  I'm glad MOOCs stirred up attention for learning and using the web to get it.

Not Futurelearn but UCL eXtend.  This was mentioned at the ALTMOOCSIG conference in Jun.   Interesting to see what happens without the massive (they are not that bothered about the scale)  but if thats the case, then will they not just be free online courses.  I don't think people make use of the massive.

EduGeek Journal » Symphony or Cacophony? Cracking the Code of Tool Selection in MOOCs | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Fiona Harvey's insight:
Yes! This is the best thing I've read all year on MOOCs - only because it relates to the fundamental application of how we learn. Platforms one end to chaos at the other end (inexperienced learners trying to do a cMOOC) but this points us into the direction of Vygotsky ZPD that's the bit in the middle. This could be the future of MOOCs.

Lessons from MOOCs - the story so far. I think he has missed out that, at least for the UK, MOOCs are a trojan horse for showing the potential of learning online, So for hybrid or blended learning, they can benefit on campus students (which is what I thought the point of the moocs would be, for all the investment, both time and money)

How MOOCs Are Being Used In Europe - Edudemic

How MOOCs Are Being Used In Europe - Edudemic | MOOCs | Scoop.it
One of the wonderful things about MOOCs is that they don’t force students to be in a particular location in order to ‘attend’ class. Especially if you’re looking for a course that will help you gain a specific skill, MOOCs allow students access to teachers and other experts they might not have otherwise. The handy …
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Looks at IT jobs and MOOCs which have a natural home - not sure about the last stats that they present on their infographic though.

Students wanting certificates (I think their is some research from Shirley Williams in Reading that this is exactly want MOOC learners don't want, they just want the skills development).  Also Institutions put off by the high cost, but they don't have to be high cost c- just thats what the institutions have gone with to meet the platform reqs...cMoocs are not as expensive and have potentially better learning outcomes if managed properly.
