Abtract from the talk:  "Sheila Webber will start by briefly outlining some general characteristics of MOOCs and her own experience with them. She will go on to identify types of MOOC and the implications for MOOC pedagogy. As part of this discussion she will note some findings from an investigation into the value of learning analytics for MOOC educators (undertaken by Naomi Colhoun at Sheffield University in summer 2014). In the final part of her presentation she will reflect on the various roles that have been, or could be, adopted by librarians."

The corridor of uncertainty: Libraries and MOOCs - the missing link?

The corridor of uncertainty: Libraries and MOOCs - the missing link? | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

That's where libraries come in according to an article on OEDb, Librarians: Your Most Valuable MOOC Supporters. Libraries provide study guidance and information retrieval tuition for campus courses so why not for MOOCs? The article urges librarians to get involved in the MOOC debate by trying them out for themselves and finding ways of supporting MOOC students with trustworthy study guides and literature lists. Many MOOCs that are already on offer have not integrated library services into the package and librarians at MOOC-universities need to get involved in course design from the beginning.

Librarians and the Era of the MOOC

Librarians and the Era of the MOOC | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

The New York Times dubbed 2012 “The Year of the MOOC,” and it has since become one of the hottest topics in education. Time magazine said that free MOOCs open the door to the “Ivy League for the Masses.” Two of the world’s leading MOOCs, Coursera and Udacity, earned venture capital in the amounts of $22 million and $15 million, respectively. Educators, politicians, and yes, librarians, are taking note of this disruptive educational technology trend, and the future it holds for the training for our future scientists, doctors, nurses, engineers, and others entering STEM fields. I remember back my library school days, how librarians were fearing and struggling to redefine their role in “search” in the Age of Google, and now, they face another challenge, finding their role aiding professors and students in the Era of the MOOC.

By Kevin Smith, J.D. On April 11, 2013

I am generally a poor speller, but even I understand that there are two Os in MOOC.  So for added clarity, let me state up front that this post will focus on the first O — the one that stands for “open.”  But I want to get to the discussion about that O in a slightly round about (pun intended) way.

In the Library with the Lead Pipe » A New Polemic: Libraries, MOOCs, and the Pedagogical Landscape

In the Library with the Lead Pipe » A New Polemic: Libraries, MOOCs, and the Pedagogical Landscape | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

In Brief: The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) has emerged in the past few years as the poster child of the online higher education revolution.  Lauded and derided, MOOCs (depending on who you ask) represent the democratization of education on a global scale, an overblown trend, or the beginning of the end of the traditional academic institution. MOOCs have gained so much critical traction because they have succeeded in unmooring educational exchanges and setting them adrift in the sea of the internet.  Although the MOOC is a new and evolving platform, it has already upended facets of education in which librarians are heavily invested including intellectual property, digital preservation, and information delivery and curricular support models. Consequently, to examine the MOOC as a microcosm is also to explore how the scope of academic librarianship is changing and will continue to change. Librarians and information professionals—who serve as bibliographers, purchasing managers, access advocates, copyright and preservation experts, and digital pioneers on many campuses—are uniquely situated to mediate this disruption and to use this opportunity to develop strategies for navigating an environment in flux.

MOOCs & Librarians - MOOCing for knowledge

MOOCs & Librarians - MOOCing for knowledge | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

The massive open online course (MOOC) is a relatively recent educational innovation. Topically, MOOCs have covered emerging educational theories and formats, and emerging educational technologies. These topics are of interest to academic librarians, and the open/online aspect makes the MOOC a convenient avenue for professional development.

MOOCs and Libraries: Massive Opportunity or Overwhelming Challenge?

MOOCs and Libraries: Massive Opportunity or Overwhelming Challenge? | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

OCLC Research and the University of Pennsylvania Libraries presented thoughtful and provocative presentations about how libraries are already getting involved with MOOCs. In-person and remote attendees learned from the pioneers how library content and services can be represented in these new learning environments, and about opportunities for new discussions with partners in supporting learning.
