#HR Mental Health at Work Report 2016

#HR Mental Health at Work Report 2016 | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
We undertook a national survey to understand the reality of how mental health is experienced at work.  The survey results tell us that progress is being made but there is a need for greater organisational awareness of the support required for better mental health at work. Significant and potentially damaging disconnects exist that demand an urgent response from business.

Employers need to recognise the scale of poor mental health in the workplace and take significant steps to reduce the risk of their workplace being a contributor.  Employers have a duty of care to their employees to respond to mental ill health just as they
would to a physical illness.  Organisations should equip their managers with the tools, support and organisational culture they need to do their job well, which must include managing employees with mental health issues. It makes good business sense to foster a culture of openness that supports employees with a mental health issue to work and stay in work.

Breaking the stigma: why every office needs a Mental Health First Aider

Breaking the stigma: why every office needs a Mental Health First Aider | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Depression, anxiety, stress - mental health issues in the workplace are cause for concern for many employers.

According to the HSE stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 9.9 million days lost to work related ill health between 2014/2015.

If absenteeism is having an impact on organisations, consider the impact of presenteeism to the organisation’s bottom line - and that’s before we even start to throw leaveism into the equation!

As a person who has ‘suffered’(and I use the word suffer deliberately, as this is not just a case of feeling a bit down, or “having an off day”), my experiences of how my illness has been dealt with/supported during my working life has varied greatly.

Why Work Relationships Affect Our Mental And Physical Health

Why Work Relationships Affect Our Mental And Physical Health | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

If you feel closely connected to your work cronies, you’re likely the healthier for it—and this applies to both physical and mental health. A meta-analysis in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Review reports that people who feel more camaraderie with their colleagues, and more connection to the company itself, have better health and happiness and are less likely to burn out. Given all the past work on how important our social relationships are for all aspects of health, the results aren’t too surprising, but it’s nice to have this kind of confirmation from such a large study.

The new analysis looked at 58 past studies that included 19,000 people in 15 countries. The participants worked in all different fields–health, sales, the military. The participants had answered questions about their work life, and their feelings about their colleagues and companies, and various aspects of their mental and physical health.

People who identified more strongly with their colleagues at work and with their organizations had greater psychological well-being, and also better physical health.

Epidemics of mental illness are crushing the minds and bodies of millions. It’s time to ask where we are heading and why.

Of all the fantasies human beings entertain, the idea that we can go it alone is the most absurd and perhaps the most dangerous. We stand together or we fall apart.

A Mental Trick to Help with Challenging Conversations

A Mental Trick to Help with Challenging Conversations | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Imagine the colleague with whom you have a very challenging relationship, the person who makes the most innocuous conversation tense and uncomfortable. Regardless of the topic, this person opposes you and approaches things as an adversary rather than an ally.

Once you can visualize that person vividly and even viscerally, imagine the following scenario: You’re sitting at your desk working away when a message from that person pops up on your screen. You open the message and it reads: “I got the draft presentation you sent. I caught a couple of mistakes, and I have some ideas for how to make it better. I’ll drop by your office at 3 PM to discuss.”

8 Things Mentally Strong People Do Every Single Day

8 Things Mentally Strong People Do Every Single Day | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Just like people aren't born with physical strength, no one is blessed with incredible mental strength at birth. Instead, mental strength is developed over time by individuals who choose to make personal development a priority.

In addition to avoiding the things that could hold them back, mentally strong people create healthy habits that assist them in growing stronger. Here are eight things mentally strong people do every day to strengthen their mental muscles:
