How To Change Someone's Mind, According To Science

How To Change Someone's Mind, According To Science | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Belief change is a war of attrition. There's usually no one argument that can suddenly get someone to see the light.

Changing someone's mind about a high-stakes position is a challenge many of us confront. Maybe your customers have preconceived ideas about your brand or products that you'd like to influence, or perhaps upper management is leaning toward a decision that you disagree with. In order to get someone to reconsider their views, it's important to understand the role of coherence in supporting beliefs.

Going back to the 1950s, psychologists have recognized the interplay among different aspects of knowledge that influence our overall set of beliefs. Building off that research, the cognitive scientist Paul Thagard has more recently put forth the concept of "explanatory coherence."

Psychologically speaking, changing someone's mind is pretty difficult, even when you don't have politics to factor in.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, March 31, 2016 12:26 AM

"Psychologically speaking, changing someone's mind is pretty difficult, even when you don't have politics to factor in." This is a very powerful aritcle that addresses an issue most of us will have faced in our careers and social life. It is simply difficult to change minds overnight, let alon instantly. When I shifted from a school that dealt with traditional pedagogy to one that was one of the pioneers in experiential pedagogy, I simply couldn't take it! The adage, 'unlearn everything' to learn something new, did not work with me for a whole six months! It took about two years finally to make me understand that experiential pedagogy does work, and that students will get to the end point on their own, provided they are given subtle cues and hints. It takes skill and science to convince people to change overnight, and just telling them to 'unlearn everything' might not be a good idea! What matters is to 'sow incoherence', make people feel worse about their current beliefs, supply them with information from different sources that support a change in their beliefs, and yes what matters is to 'address their emotional attachment to what they believe.' It is only then that you might be able to bring about a change in someone's mind!

#Pymes #Empresas #RRHH 10 Principles of Organisation Design

#Pymes #Empresas #RRHH 10 Principles of Organisation Design | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

A global electronics manufacturer seemed to live in a perpetual state of reorganization. A new line of communication devices for the Asian market required reorienting its sales, marketing, and support functions. Migration to cloud-based business applications called for changes to the IT organization. Altogether, it had reorganized six times in 10 years.

Suddenly, however, the company found itself facing a different challenge. Given the new technologies that had entered its category, and a sea change in customer expectations, it needed a new strategy. The CEO decided to shift from a product-based business model to a customer-centric one. That meant yet another reorganization, but this one would be different. It had to go beyond shifting the lines and boxes in an org chart.

#RRHH #HR 5 Signs It's Time for You to Change Careers

#RRHH #HR 5 Signs It's Time for You to Change Careers | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Many people hate change; contemplating the unknown is scary. So many stick with familiar things even though they no longer fit. This is especially true of careers. Sometimes people get stuck in a career direction or work environment that makes them terribly unhappy, and they stay there because it's tough to change careers once you have gained experience, power, and good compensation.

People often end up in the wrong careers by accident. They start out with a job and become proficient, so they advance and make a good living. They may even start a company in that field. They get so focused on growth, meeting objectives, or making the money to support their lifestyle, they don't realize how toxic their life has become.

Sometimes you just end up following the wrong career path and it takes someone else to objectively point it out. Here are 5 signs you can identify on your own.

Graeme Reid's curator insight, July 28, 2014 6:36 PM

If you recognise these signs then it may be time to consider a career change.

James Cracknell's curator insight, July 29, 2014 4:24 AM

Recognise any of these? - I felt many of them in my career but one that is not mentioned is guilt. Guilt that you are doing a job that many would crave for; guilt that you feel this way at all; guilt that you constantly keep asking that there must be more to life yet how would others that you love feel about a sudden urge to change?

4 Habits of a New Generation of Top Sales Performers

4 Habits of a New Generation of Top Sales Performers | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Well, in my experience, the profile of the top performing salespeople is changing. And fast! As I built the HubSpot sales team over the last 6 years, I probably hired close to 200 salespeople. It amazes me, even in that short period, how the profile of the industry’s top performers has shifted. Here are four habits that today’s top performers exhibit that yesterday’s top performers did not.

#1: They are Data Jocks

Historically sales managers have taken extraordinary strides to measure the performance of their salespeople… and salespeople have avoided these tactics like the plague. “What I do cannot be measured. It is an art form.”Today’s top sales performers love the data. To them, data represents the blue print to excellence. They want to know:

Why Taking A Vacation Can Make You Better At Your Job

Why Taking A Vacation Can Make You Better At Your Job | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

A 2014 Oxford Economics Assessment of Paid Time Off in the U.S. showed 42% of employees with paid time off finished the year with unused days, leaving an average of 8.1 days unused.

Small business owners are especially bad at taking time away. According to the 2013 Sage Reinvention of Small Business Study, 43% of small business owners are taking less vacation time than five years ago.

The fact that we don't use all of our vacation time isn’t all that surprising. After all, getting away for a few days or weeks can be overwhelming when it feels like stepping away from the office will create a painful backlog of work when you return.

But what if stepping away from the daily grind made you better at your job?

10 Principles of Change #Management

10 Principles of Change #Management | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Way back when (pick your date), senior executives in large companies had a simple goal for themselves and their organizations: stability. Shareholders wanted little more than predictable earnings growth.

1. Address the “human side” systematically. Any significant transformation creates “people issues.” New leaders will be asked to step up, jobs will be changed, new skills and capabilities must be developed, and employees will be uncertain and resistant. Dealing with these issues on a reactive, case-by-case basis puts speed, morale, and results at risk. A formal approach for managing change — beginning with the leadership team and then engaging key stakeholders and leaders — should be developed early, and adapted often as change moves through the organization.

#HR #RRHH #Leadership How to Lead in Ambiguous Times? | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
A glance at today’s headlines leaves little doubt that we have entered a new era of geopolitical turbulence. Acts of terror and violence, humanitarian crises, and public health emergencies are rarely localized events. Instead, these shocks transcend borders, presenting global challenges. Just as one crisis fades, another rises to take its place. Adding further complexity, today’s enemy (unlike in that previous period of great geopolitical uncertainty, the Cold War) is often unseen or unknown.

What an extremely tough thing to figure out: what to do with your future! Now, I can't really know exactly what this young woman should do, but I can share what I've learned looking back on my life, and what I would tell my kids (the oldest is 21 and still figuring things out, but I also have 17- and 16-year-old boys and a 14-year-old girl). It's the nature of business to create panic and chaos. Everyone dreams of a company that runs smoothly and efficiently, but ambitious entrepreneurs, managers and salespeople can't help but push for speed. Rather than slow down on a product release or turn down a customer or two until processes are ready, decisions are made that tax resources and send teams into a frenzy.

It used to be said that the only thing constant is change.  However, these days we can add another - chaos.  As we all experience it, it is good to adopt skills that will help us cope rather than set expectations to eliminate it.
