La série «Real Humans», qui commence en France le jeudi 4 avril sur Arte, met en scène, dans un futur proche, des robots humanoïdes très avancés. Mais qui y a-t-il de si intéressant à fabriquer des machines qui nous ressemblent?

Dans la série Real Humans diffusée à partir de ce jeudi soir sur Arte, les robots («Hubots») ne répondent pas tous aux critères de perfection que nous pourrions vouloir enfin réunir dans un être humain. Si la plupart arborent une plastique irréprochable, ça n’est pas le cas de certains robots de basses œuvres. [ATTENTION SPOILER SUR LA SUTE DE CE PARAGRAPHE] Moralement non plus, les Hubots ne semblent pas tous particulièrement exemplaires et certains vont violer les lois d’Asimov, qui sont implicitement citées dans la série. Plus étonnant, un robot-mégère-ménagère, va jusqu’à administrer à son insu des somnifères à son propriétaire [FIN DU SPOILER]. 

 

Dans cette série, par ailleurs visiblement bien documentée et plutôt convaincante, point comme presque toujours dans la science-fiction, l’éternelle crainte d’un soulèvement des robots.


Pour qu’une telle issue soit envisageable, il faudrait d’abord que nous ayons résolu le problème de l’intelligence artificielle, ce qui, n’en croyez pas la robohype, n’est absolument pas le cas. Pourtant, avec cette crainte à l’esprit, nous continuons à fabriquer des robots humanoïdes qui nous ressemblent de plus en plus. Quel est donc l’intérêt de fabriquer de faux humains? N’y a-t-il pas une infinité de choses que d’autres formes que les notres réaliseraient mieux? Au-delà de l’apparence, pourquoi vouloir mettre en œuvre des éléments de personnalité et des émotions dans les robots?

Somehow i can't stop thinking, "Next step, Dr. Frankenstein" -

It's maybe not rationeal thinking but i find this so scaring. Imagine if it was you on the table and the robot arms start moving above you - huuuu it's freaking scaring ;-)

I agree this can be scary, however you can expect completely autonomous surgical robots to appear in the very near future. that will be much more scarier than a human controlled one, that's for sure

New technologies, new moralities

Religious and other organizations will define and attempt to regulate the ways in which human treat humanoid robots, since they will be considered quasi-human, sentient creatures that must be treated with respect and not abused. Thus, the changing legal and social framework will deal with the proper use of robots by humans as well as the proper behavior of robots toward humans, and new sets of “post-Asimov” laws will emerge.

 

Finally, a few concluding thoughts. The rapid increase in the number and sophistication of autonomous systems, including humanoid robots, lead to dramatic changes in society. Robots will assume an increasing share of human work and responsibility, thus creating a major social problem with unemployment and the relations of humans and robots. I believe that new frameworks for these interactions will emerge within the next 25 to 50 years. If they do not, there may be neo-Luddite rebellions, in which humans will attempt to destroy large numbers of robots. Those of us who design, program, and implement robots have a major responsibility to assist in the creation and implementation of patterns of behavior and legal systems to ensure that robots and humans co-evolve and co-exist for the benefit of society.

 

Robots are here to stay. They will be smarter, more versatile, more autonomous, and more like us in many ways. We humans will need to adapt to this coming world.

A world without limits between the real and the virtual world.

 

New technologies are blurring the boundaries between the real and the virtual world. The brain can control a machine, and even perceive it as its own body. Can that improve our lives?

At Barcelona University, scientists are working on a European Research Project to link a human brain to a robot using skin electrodes and video goggles so that the user feels they are actually in the android body wherever it is in the world.

 

The electrodes measure brain impulses enabling a person to control the robot's actions without moving their own limbs. The idea is to enable severely disabled people to enter the world via a real-life avatar.

 

Using a remote avatar, anyone can travel without leaving home. But to make the experience feel more realistic, several senses need to work together.

In a laboratory in Pisa, scientists are testing a chair that vibrates in time with 3D video playback, recreating some of the physical aspects of walking.

An even deeper immersion into the virtual world becomes possible with robotic exoskeletons that simulate physical interactions, and with advanced 3D projection systems.

Touching virtual objects, feeling their texture and weight, will make the digital world more natural and easier to live in.

 

But what if virtual models could change the real world, making it more accessible? That's the goal of another European project involving hundreds of diabled people in several countries.

Scientists use cameras and sensors to study how physically impaired people move, getting a better idea of their average physical limitations.

 

The data is used to simulate how motor-impaired people cope with various tasks - such as opening the glove compartment in a car.

With these models, industrial designers will know in advance how safe and convenient their new products are, and can adapt them better for users with physical limitations.

Seeing the screen through the eyes of someone with advanced glaucoma, using the mouse as a person with tremors... makes it easier to understand other people's physical challenges, helping us move towards a world without limits.

which helps severely disabled people to interact with the world.
