«VitaSense est la première solution de détection radar intérieure au monde pour la détection des enfants sans surveillance (UCD) dans les véhicules et est susceptible de devenir un produit phare pour notre entreprise», déclarait, en janvier dernier au moment du lancement commercial, Alain Schumacher, directeur de la technologie chez IEE.

Luxembourg has been named this year’s World Champion of Hwa Rang Do, an ancient Korean martial art.

The national Luxembourg team has come away from the Annual Hwa Rang Do World Championships, held on 30 June and 1 July 2019 in the Italian province of Tuscany, with the title of Overall Team Champion.

Every year since 1999, the USA has won the team competition title. This year, however, the Grand Duchy prevailed against the previously unbeaten champions.

Hwa Rang Do is a 2,000-year-old Korean martial art that unites a variety of disciplines, including physical and mental techniques and weaponry. In the 1960s, Dr. Joo Bang Lee regimented and integrated these disciplines into a modern martial art.

The National Brewery (Brasserie Nationale) last month signed a new collaboration agreement with Ansay International for the exclusive distribution of Luxembourg beet, wine and cider in the US.

For more than 10 years, Ansay International has represented exclusively the Bofferding beers of the Brasserie Nationale in the United States. In addition, Ansay Int. imports and distributes the wines of the Luxembourg Moselle, Ramborn ciders and Luxembourg mustard. These products are distributed in the North West, namely the states of Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio and the Chicago area.

Ansay International is a family business owned by the Ansay family in Port Washington, Wisconsin, where the Luxembourg tradition is still alive: every year, the inhabitants of this village celebrate Luxembourg Fest in August. The business is also active in the banking sector and currently manages one of the largest insurance portfolios in the region since 1946. Under the leadership of Mike Ansay and his daughter Kate, Ansay Int. has developed imports of products from Luxembourg companies.

Less than 5% of the world's population lives in a "full democracy," according to a new report ranking countries by how functional their political systems are.

The Economist Intelligence Unit released on Wednesday its 2017 Democracy Index, which ranks 167 countries on a 0 to 10 scale. Only countries with scores above 8 are categorised as "full" democracies.

The US was downgraded from a "full democracy" to a "flawed democracy" in the same study last year, which cited the "low esteem in which US voters hold their government, elected representatives, and political parties."

The study has five criteria: whether elections are free and fair ("electoral process and pluralism"), governments have checks and balances ("functioning of government"), and whether citizens are included in politics ("political participation"), support their government ("political culture"), and enjoy freedom of expression ("civil liberties").

Le Luxembourg présentera pour la première fois au mois de janvier un stand aux couleurs nationales lors du plus grand salon dédié aux nouvelles technologies, le CES de Las Vegas. Huit pépites luxembourgeoises y participeront. Nous continuons notre série avec CoinPlus.

Si l’investissement dans des crypto-monnaies peut s’avérer un excellent placement à moyen et long terme, il n’en reste pas moins risqué. En effet, la seule preuve de son avoir réside dans un code d’accès. C’est pour donner un peu de poids à la technologie que CoinPlus a mis en place une solution de «crypto-barre».

En date du 19 décembre 2017, le Vice-Premier ministre, ministre de l’Économie, Étienne Schneider, s’est vu décerner lors d’une cérémonie à Washington le titre de "Government Leader of the Year" par le magazine américain SpaceNews dans le cadre des "SpaceNews Awards for Excellence & Innovation". Répartis en 8 catégories, ces prix récompensent l’excellence et l’innovation parmi les professionnels, entreprises, programmes et organisations relevant de l’industrie spatiale.

Couvrant l’actualité politique et commerciale de l’industrie spatiale internationale, le magazine spécialisé SpaceNews et ses lecteurs, ainsi qu’un jury indépendant qui a sélectionné les finalistes, ont honoré l’engagement d’Étienne Schneider pour promouvoir l’exploration et l’utilisation de ressources spatiales et pour avoir positionné le Luxembourg avec l’initiative SpaceResources.lu comme centre européen dans ce domaine.

Lors de la remise officielle des prix à Washington au City Club, S.E. Sylvie Lucas, ambassadeur du Luxembourg aux États-Unis d'Amérique a eu l’honneur d’accepter cette récompense au nom du Vice-Premier ministre, ministre de l’Économie, Étienne Schneider.

An unprecedented partnership between the European American Enterprise Council (EAEC), a Luxembourg-based accelerator, and Luxinnovation will enable eight start-ups from Luxembourg to be present at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas in January.

The cherry on top of the cake? The eight stands will be in the Eureka Pavilion, the most prestigious of this worldwide event for electronics enthusiasts, which will take place from January 9 to 12 2018. 

This year, the CES welcomed 200,000 professionals. 600 start-ups were present on the famous Eureka space in the middle of the 4,000 exhibitors, and the event was followed by 60,000 media outlets. 

The eight start-ups will be selected before 15 November by a committee composed of members of the EAEC and Luxinnovation. 

The privileged sectors are space, automotive, media & content, fintech, cyber security, big data, internet of things (IoT), green technologies and food technologies.

Cette mission américaine a d’ailleurs comme principal objectif de promouvoir le Luxembourg comme un des pionniers dans le domaine ;  un pays ouvert à la créativité foisonnante de la Silicon Valley. La visite de SpaceX, pionnière dans la mise  en œuvre des fusées de lancement réutilisables,  le 22 septembre, n’est d’ailleurs pas anodine car la SES a été la première entreprises dans le domaine des satellites à accorder sa confiance au projet d’Elon Musk qui tente de réduire au maximum les frais liés aux  voyages spatiaux. «C’est avec ces initiatives que nous montrons notre volonté de participer  activement au soutien des domaines de l’économie qui ont un grand potentiel.» Et de rajouter le space mining et les efforts fournis dans les Fintech. Autant de projets qui ont fait du Luxembourg un partenaire pris au sérieux et fiable, résume en substance Xavier Bettel.

Mais c’est certainement la visite de Google, ce jeudi 21 septembre qui est la plus attendue, même si le Premier ministre a encore répété qu’il ne divulguerait  rien des entretiens avec le géant américain sur l’éventuelle construction d’un centre de données au Luxembourg: «Les contacts sont bons, les contrats sont meilleurs», a conclu Xavier Bettel,  qui avait décidé,  après l’annonce hâtive du ministre de l’Economie, Etienne Schneider, sur l’installation d’un centre de Google, de verrouiller la communication sur le dossier.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider will present Luxembourg's innovations in the space industry sector at a conference in New York this bank holiday weekend.

On Monday, Schneider will speak at a conference -- "The Promise of Space Resources: a Luxembourg Public-Private Initiative" -- organised by the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office in New York.

The conference will provide the most recent details on Luxembourg’s SpaceResources.lu initiative and on innovations in the space industry sector.

With a focus on investment opportunities and financing of space exploration, expert corporate and investor insights will be provided.

Multiresistente Keime sind heutzutage eine der großen Herausforderungen der Medizin und der öffentlichen Gesundheit. Antworten auf diese Herausforderung sucht Camilla Hurst mit ihrer Forschung. Den Schwerpunkt legt die Forscherin auf die Prävention. Das berichtet die "Fondation jeunes scientifiques Luxembourg" in einer Pressemitteilung.

2015 bereits hatte Hurst eine neue Bakterie entdeckt. Ein Jahr später hatte sie bislang unbekannte antibakterielle Eigenschaften der Kiefer aufgezeigt. Im letzten Jahr dann legte sie nach und isolierte das Molekül, das für diese Eigenschaften verantwortlich ist.

Wirtschaftsminister Schneider sucht weitere Space-Partner
Die erste Etappe der Wirtschaftsmission an die US-amerikanische Westküste ist vollbracht. Wirtschaftsminister Etienne Schneider und Erbgroßherzog Guillaume mit Erbgroßherzogin Stéphanie besuchten am Montag das Unternehmen Planetary Resources in Redmond nahe Seattle.

Als Beispiel dafür, wie Luxemburg bereits in der Vergangenheit mit öffentlich-privater Kooperation trumpfen konnte, nannte Schneider das Satellitenunternehmen SES, das in seiner Branche weltweit führend ist. Diesem Beispiel folgend will Schneider denn auch die 25-Millionen-Euro-Investition Luxemburgs in Planetary Resources verstanden wissen.

Damit sei der Grundstein für eine kommende Zusammenarbeit zwischen Luxemburg und Planetary Resources auf Jahre hinaus gelegt. Nicht zuletzt, weil man die gleiche Vision teile: Die friedliche Nutzung von Weltraum-Rohstoffen zum Wohle der Menschheit.

Les autorités de Virginie et SES ont annoncé la création d’un nouveau centre technologique et opérationnel à Bristow, dans le comté de Prince William, où travailleront 200 personnes d’ici 2026.

«En consolidant nos opérations locales de satellites et de réseau SES, et en sélectionnant un hub américain pour les héberger toutes, nous devions tenir compte des déplacements de nos employés, de la localisation de nos investissements dans l’infrastructure satellitaire existante et de l’accès à un bassin de talents d’ingénierie plus large», explique le CEO de SES, Steve Collar , dans un communiqué. «Nous sommes ravis d’avoir atterri sur l’emplacement idéal du comté de Prince William, car ce nouveau hub offre à SES l’espace nécessaire pour continuer à fournir des services transparents et s’aligne sur notre objectif de fournir des solutions évolutives et innovantes pour les clients, tout en adaptant la façon dont nous fonctionnerons dans un monde post-pandémique. Avec plus de personnes exigeant plus de connectivité et de services de données.»

L’opérateur de télécommunications investira 17 millions de dollars dans cette nouvelle installation, dans laquelle travailleront 200 personnes d’ici 2026.

Luxembourg expects to sign a space cooperation agreement with the US, anticipated to be the “most far-reaching agreement since the launch” of the Space Resources initiative.

Speaking at a Space Café meeting at BIL headquarters on 26 February, deputy prime minister and economy minister Etienne Schneider told an audience of over 100 people that the US ambassador to Luxembourg had said the White House was very interested in Luxembourg’s activities in the newspace sector.

“The first thing I thought was ‘that’s not good because I’m not minister of defence any more. I won’t be able to defend my initiative’. He explained that they really see a bright future between Luxembourg and the US in order to put our forces together to further develop our activities,” the minister said.

Forscher: US-Zölle würden Luxemburg 125 Millionen Euro kosten

Die durch die USA angekündigten Zölle auf Stahl, Aluminium und Autos würden Luxemburg verhältnismäßig stark treffen – und das Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP) um 0,24 Prozent mindern. Damit würde das Großherzogtum 125 Millionen Euro weniger verbuchen. Das meldet das Wirtschaftsforschungsinstitut Ifo.

Die Münchner Forscher haben Land für Land berechnet, wie sich die angekündigte Zölle der USA auf Stahl, Aluminium und Autos auf das jeweilige Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP) auswirken würden.

In der ganzen EU würde das BIP mit insgesamt neun Milliarden Euro belastet. In Prozent ausgedrückt wären das 0,06 Prozent der europäischen Wirtschaftsleistung ausmachten.

Le groupe d'investissement californien Marlin Equity acquiert ce jeudi la majorité des parts de Trendiction, indique l'entreprise active dans la veille et l'analyse des réseaux sociaux. Dans un communiqué, la direction de cette véritable success story luxembourgeoise se dit "fière" d'être capitalisée à cette hauteur par l'un des principaux fonds internationaux d'investissement.

"Cette acquisition permettra à Talkwalker d'accélérer sa croissance", lit-on dans la communication du groupe. L'entreprise luxembourgeoise créée en 2009 par Thibaut Britz et Christophe Folschette dans le Technoport d'Esch-sur-Alzette emploie aujourd'hui 200 personnes et compte plus de 1.000 clients servis via ses bureaux répartis entre Luxembourg, New York, San Francisco et Francfort.

An American artist will be arriving in Luxembourg this month to take part in an emerging artist-in-residence programme at Bourglinster Castle.

Chris Maddox from Madison, Wisconsin, was selected by the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) for the programme, which is offered by MOWA exclusively to Wisconsin artists.

The mixed-media artist's work has previously been acquired by museums and private collectors in the US, Italy and Japan.

His current work focuses on book art projects and installation work.

MOWA executive director and chief executive Laurie Winters said Maddox "stood out as a rising star".

She added: "I know he will be inspired by the Luxembourg culture and community of artists to both grow and create while aboard."

China baut seine Vormachtstellung im Ranking der schnellsten Supercomputer der Welt weiter aus. In der 50. Ausgabe der "Top 500"-Rangliste stellt das Land insgesamt 201 Anlagen und überholt die USA (145 Anlagen) damit deutlich. 

Luxemburgs Supercomputer kommt noch

Ab 2018 soll auch Luxemburg über seinen eigenen Supercomputer verfügen. Die Leistung des Computers soll bei einem Petaflop liegen. Wirtschaftsminister Etienne Schneider hatte im Mai eine entsprechende Deklaration zur europäische Kooperation im Bereich des “High Performance Computing” (HCP) unterschrieben.

Peter H. Diamandis wirbt in Luxemburg für „Planetary Resources“
Auf seinem goldenen Siegelring ist eine Rakete zu sehen, die aufsteigt. „Das ist das Zeichen der Singularity University“, lächelt Peter H. Diamandis. Der Gründer von nicht weniger als 19 Unternehmen und zwei Universitäten ist ein seltener Gast in Luxemburg und per Du mit den großen Konzernchefs dieser Erde; egal ob Elon Musk von Tesla oder Amazon-Gründer Jeff Bezos. Dass der gelernte Luftfahrtingenieur einen Vortrag im OAI hält, hat seinen Grund. Der Amerikaner erklärt im Grunde genommen, was „Planetary Resources“ machen wird - in seiner Heimat USA, aber auch hier in Luxemburg. Diamandis hat das Unternehmen gegründet.

Sein Vortrag soll vor allem Ängste nehmen und das unfassbar Weite erklären. Er redet darüber, dass Transistor-Chips immer schneller und preiswerter geworden sind. „1958 waren es zwei Transistoren, 1971 schon 2.300 und 2016 ganze 14,4 Milliarden auf einem Stück Silicon!“ Damit leitet er über zum Weltraum, denn: „Dort wird auch alles immer schneller und preiswerter.“ Das ermöglicht neue Geschäftsmodelle, denn dort oben gibt es Rohstoffe. „Die Erde ist ein Supermarkt voller Ressourcen, die im All unbegrenzt vorhanden sind.“

Am meisten interessieren den Gründer des ersten Weltraum-Tourismus-Unternehmens „Space Adventures“ die Stoffe Wasser, Karbon, Sauerstoff und Stickstoff - und vielleicht noch ein paar Metalle. Er erklärt auch gleich, warum: „Mit Wasser und Sauerstoff kann man im All für einen Antrieb sorgen, ohne etwas von der Erde dorthin bringen zu müssen.“ Denn die ersten Kilometer ins All sind die teuersten, kosten sie doch den meisten Sprit.

At the International Science and Engineer Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles last week, Camilla Hurst’s project of a self-cleaning door handle took away fourth prize from among 2,000 participants aged 15 to 18 from 78 countries in a major first for Luxembourg. 

Just 16 years old, Camilla already has a string of impressive scientific achievements under her belt with three national competition wins and several international awards, and now adds this prize at the largest international science fair for young students in the world. 

Her project concerned the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, which is becoming a major public health problem. The variety of treatments but especially the prevention of the transmission of pathogenic bacteria are the solutions advocated by the public health authorities. This is the heart of Camilla Hurst's project: after discovering a new bacterium in 2015, and then demonstrating anti-bacterial properties still unknown to untreated pine in 2016, the young researcher sought to identify and then isolate the molecule responsible for these anti-bacterial properties in 2017. In order to limit the particularly high risk of contamination in public places, she designed and built a prototype for a self-cleaning door handle which also disinfects the user's hands whenever the mechanism is engaged.

Camilla's multidisciplinary approach demonstrated to the American judges a global understanding of the problem and has emphasised the scope of her work in microbiology, biochemistry and engineering to help find concrete solutions to the problem. An issue as vast and comprehensive as epidemics, even pandemics.
