New International Master in Biomedicine | #UniversityLuxembourg #Luxembourg #Europe

New International Master in Biomedicine | #UniversityLuxembourg #Luxembourg #Europe | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

The University of Luxembourg together with the University of Strasbourg and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have developed a joint international study programme in Biomedicine. The tri-national Master starts in September 2018 with seven students.

With the growing importance of academic and industrial biomedicine laboratories in the region and in line with Luxembourg’s strategy to support training and research in medicine, the new Master of Science in Biomedicine will offer a strong multidisciplinary education in the fields of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, neurosciences and immunology.

As Course Director from the University of Luxembourg, Professor Thomas Sauter presents the main advantages of the Master: “On top of an excellent interdisciplinary training, students will benefit from a multicultural approach, working with international students, learning from different scientific viewpoints, making the link between medicine and research, working with key industry partners, understanding local and international challenges. They will be part of a privileged network, composed of academic and industrial stakeholders.

Metabolic modelling becomes three-dimensional | #Luxembourg #UniversityLuxembourg #Europe #Research #3D #BioMedicine #LCSB #Recon3D

Metabolic modelling becomes three-dimensional | #Luxembourg #UniversityLuxembourg #Europe #Research #3D #BioMedicine #LCSB #Recon3D | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

An international research consortium has developed, with significant involvement of Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) scientists, the first computer model to include 3D in the representation of human metabolic processes.

To this end, the researchers integrated the three-dimensional structures of over 4,000 metabolic products, or metabolites as they are known, and nearly 13,000 proteins into an existing computer model. They also added an enormous volume of genetic and chemical information to the model on which the simulation runs. The name of this new computer-based tool, which has been made available to the biomedical research community recently, is Recon3D. The researchers’ results on Recon3D appear in the journal Nature Biotechnology (doi:10.1038/nbt.4072).

Recon3D is available at vmh.live, Virtual Metabolic Human database.

The importance of scientific computer models continues to increase. They make the existing knowledge tangible and thereby help scientists to accurately formulate and work on targeted problems in research. To create such models, researchers analyse all the publications and databases they can find on a topic and feed this information into their model.

Elixir: New platform makes a wealth of data accessible | #Luxembourg #UniversityLuxembourg #BioMedical #Research  | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
With ELIXIR, the European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information, fifteen European countries have established a secure hub-and-node infrastructure in which biological data will be permanently accessible for research.

On Thursday, 7 September 2017, the Luxembourg ELIXIR node (ELIXIR-LU), an important interface in the field of translational medicine, will start its activity.

Funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, ELIXIR-LU will henceforth allow researchers across Europe to have access to personalised biomedical data stored centrally at the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg.

“Providing these data for other researchers and analysing them in different contexts could lead to new diagnostic methods, better therapies, or hitherto unknown approaches in the prevention of certain diseases,” stresses Dr Reinhard Schneider, head of ELIXIR-LU.

Luxembourg's 1st HealthTech Incubator to Open in Spring | #Bimedical #Research #Europe

Luxembourg's 1st HealthTech Incubator to Open in Spring | #Bimedical #Research #Europe | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

During a press conference on Thursday, Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot announced the creation of a first incubator exclusively dedicated to health technologies (HealthTech) as part of the extension of the House of Biohealth in Esch-Belval.

Offering nearly 350 m2 of furnished laboratory space, the bioincubator will host spin-offs and start-ups. Representing an investment of €850,000, the project will be operational in spring 2021. The bioincubator will be housed in the House of Biohealth and will be able to accommodate between eight and ten spin-offs and start-ups during the first two to three years of starting their activities.

The bioincubator is expected to accelerate the economic impact of investments devoted to developing public biomedical research in Luxembourg. In addition to the provision of fully equipped laboratory spaces, the hosted companies will benefit from professional support in terms of business development specific to the HealthTech sector.

Did you know that the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine at the University of Luxembourg is now member of the European ELIXIR network? This initiative makes research from all of its members available to the other members, thereby fostering scientific exchange. http://ow.ly/DAvg30fDtTh

On 7 September 2017, Luxembourg joined 20 other European countries in the ELIXIR (European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information) network, a network in which life science research data are shared and made available on the Internet in the long term.

Université du Luxembourg

Sciences such as biology and biomedicine are generating gigantic amounts of research data from the analysis of genomes and gene products. Often, however, these data are only kept in one place, making comparisons between different studies difficult and the legalities regarding their use unclear. ELIXIR – the “European life-sciences Infrastructure for biological Information” is looking to fix this unfortunate state of affairs.

Now Luxembourg becomes member of this transnational network: ELIXIR Luxembourg. In ELIXIR, 18 European countries are providing the ICT infrastructure for making data from biological and medical studies permanently accessible, to enhance their analysis and to support scientists´ research. With ELIXIR, Luxembourg aims to connect the national digitalisation strategy with the fast growing sector of biomedicine.
