Université du Luxembourg Sciences such as biology and biomedicine are generating gigantic amounts of research data from the analysis of genomes and gene products. Often, however, these data are only kept in one place, making comparisons between different studies difficult and the legalities regarding their use unclear. ELIXIR – the “European life-sciences Infrastructure for biological Information” is looking to fix this unfortunate state of affairs. Now Luxembourg becomes member of this transnational network: ELIXIR Luxembourg. In ELIXIR, 18 European countries are providing the ICT infrastructure for making data from biological and medical studies permanently accessible, to enhance their analysis and to support scientists´ research. With ELIXIR, Luxembourg aims to connect the national digitalisation strategy with the fast growing sector of biomedicine. Dr Massimiliano Esposito, a physicist at the University of Luxembourg, has just been awarded a prestigious “Consolidator Grant” by the European Research Council (ERC). Esposito, a Luxembourgish expert in nanosystems thermodynamics, will receive altogether 1.7 million euros funding over the next five years for his project entitled “Energy Conversion and Information Processing at Small Scales”.
The “ERC Consolidator Grant” is one of the most sought-after competitive research grants in Europe. These grants are designed to support highly promising young researchers at the stage at which they are consolidating their own independent research team or programme.
They are awarded to selected top researchers with 7 to 12 years’ experience after PhD. The European Research Council awards these competitive ERC research grants to promote the next generation of innovative top-level researchers and to retain research talents in Europe.

The startup LuxAI was created following a research project at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxembourg, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) under its Proof of Concept scheme. The business model of LuxAI is developing and constructing so-called social robots.
Such robots can be used, for example, in the educational or health system, where they would support trainers and therapists in their work. The robots can be programmed to practice vocabulary with children or to make rehabilitation exercises with stroke patients. Université du Luxembourg
The University of Luxembourg has signed an agreement with the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), often considered to be the best public university in the world. On collaboration and exchange This agreement on research collaboration and the exchange of scientists was signed recently by the President of the University of Luxembourg, Professor Rainer Klump, and Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks of UC Berkeley. Professor Jeroen Dewulf, Director of the Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley, was also present. UC Berkeley and the University of Luxembourg already collaborate in research areas such as biology, computer science, history and law. Both sides wish to widen the scope of this research collaboration to areas such as information and communication technology (ICT), finance, social inequality and European studies. Moreover, the pair have both recently opened a new campus on a brownfield site and are therefore keen to exchange experience.
