«Unsere Website visitluxembourg.com ist sehr nützlich für die Planung eines Aufenthalts im Großherzogtum, aber was noch fehlte, war ein Tool, das Touristen in Echtzeit führt, wenn sie erst einmal vor Ort sind», so Sebastian Reddeker, CEO von Luxembourg for Tourism. Das ist nun Realität geworden. Das Ministerium für Tourismus hat am Dienstagmorgen die VisitLuxembourg-App gestartet.

Nach dem Download aus dem App Store oder dem Play Store, dient die neue App als Kompass und Reisebegleiter. «Sie lokalisiert den Nutzer geografisch und zeigt die Sehenswürdigkeiten und Attraktionen in der Umgebung, wie man dorthin gelangt, wo man buchen kann, wie das Wetter ist», erklärt Sebastien Reddeker. «Die App ist in sechs Kategorien unterteilt: Kultur, Natur, Gastronomie und Nachtleben, Sport und Aktivitäten, geführte Touren und Made in Luxembourg. Ganz zu schweigen von zwanzig Unterkategorien und Filtermöglichkeiten», ergänzt Tourismusminister Lex Delles (DP).

Luxembourg is overflowing with castles marking the history of the country through the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque periods. Many are still in private hands, some undergoing renovation and others are now museums or restaurants. So which ones can you still visit to get a slice of life in Luxembourg in times gone by and hear a local legend?

Luxembourg is something of a hidden gem nestled between the borders of Belgium, France and Germany.

Slightly smaller than Lancashire – and with less than half the population – the Grand Duchy has remained hidden in plain sight from those looking for a continental break.

Rich in history it offers fortifications, chateaux and old town streets for those keen to step back through the centuries and go exploring with the fairytale Vianden Castle the pick of the bunch.
Built on a rocky promontory it towers over the pretty little ‘city’ of Vianden (pop. 2,000) and is best accessed from an Alpine chairlift offering breathtaking views along the River Our and across to neighbouring Germany.

The Gothic castle dates back to the 10th century and has been rebuilt several times and even survived the Battle of the Bulge during the Second World War intact, perhaps endorsing its impregnable location.
Indeed across the ages the people of Luxembourg proved adept at creating mighty fortifications as they faced the threat of invaders from different quarters.

Among the most popular of the capital’s attractions the Bock Casemates were considered a model for European military architecture for hundreds of years.
Dubbed the ‘Gibraltar of the North’ the mysterious tunnels of the bastion have witnessed the comings and goings of life Luxembourg from their vantage point high up in the sheer city walls.

Gehören zum UNESCO-Welterbe, die ersten Kasematten entstanden 1644 zur Zeit der spanischen Fremdherrschaft. Der eigentliche Ausbau der insgesamt 23 km langen unterirdischen Galerien erfolgte 40 Jahre später durch den französischen Militäringenieur und Festungsbauer Vauban und im 18. Jahrhundert durch die Österreicher. Die Befestigungsgänge waren auf verschiedenen Ebenen angelegt und reichten bis 40 m Tiefe hinab. Angesichts dieser eindrucksvollen Festungswerke erhielt Luxemburg den Beinamen “Gibraltar des Nordens”.

Nach der Schleifung 1867 blieben 17 km der Kasematten erhalten. Seit 1933 sind die Bock- und Petruss-Kasematten für Besichtigungen zugänglich. Die Festungsbollwerke und die nicht minder geschichtsträchtige Altstadt genießen weltweites Renommee. 1994 wurden sie von der UNESCO in die Liste des Welterbes aufgenommen.

What is it about castles that fascinates so many people around the globe?

A lot of the allure derives from the history and human drama that played out within the walls, as well as the astonishing architecture that features on so many castles. But they're also romantic and somewhat mystical, places that spark our imagination and conjure visions of long-ago knights in shining armor and powerful warrior queens.

"Because they combine two functions, they are far more interesting than fortresses or palaces," says Marc Morris, author of "Castles: Their History and Evolution in Medieval Britain."
"What makes a castle a castle is that it combines the functions of defense and dwelling -- it's a fortification and a stately home rolled into one. Creating a building which is both comfortable and defensible is difficult. The ingenious ways in which castle-designers reconciled this balance is always intriguing."

Although we normally associate castles with European history, it's actually an architectural form found around the world -- in nations as varied as Japan and India, Morocco and Mexico.
Many are now hubs of living history where modern visitors can watch jousting and other ancient combat forms, listen to medieval music or watch artisans demonstrate the arts, crafts and everyday skills of a thousand years ago.

Eine Million Euro lässt sich das luxemburgische Wirtschaftsministerium die Ankurbelung des Tourismus im Luxemburger Osten kosten. Zunächst. Das ist die Anschubfinanzierung, um das Start-up "Regiotels" auf die Beine zu stellen.

Die dort versammelten Tourismusprofis sollen das machen, was sich viele kleinere und mittlere Betriebe gar nicht oder nur schlecht leisten können: Marketing für die Hotels, Verkauf der zur Verfügung stehenden Betten und eine maximale Auslastung mit neuen Kunden erreichen.

Preisdumping sorgt für Nachfrage

Im Moment laufen die Buchungen über Portale wie booking.com oder expedia.com mit dem Ergebnis, dass in saison-schwachen Zeiten Preisdumping den Ausschlag für die Buchung gibt.

"Mit diesen Zimmerpreisen kommen wir nicht mehr auf unsere Kosten", sagt Robert Hein, Direktor des Hotels Bel-Air in Echternach. Das soll sich zukünftig über eine vorher mit "Regiotel" ausgemachte Marge für Maximum-Preis und Minimum-Preis ändern.

Le label "Eurewelcome"
En date du 21 septembre 2016, la secrétaire d’État à l’Économie, Francine Closener a remis la plaquette officielle du label "Eurewelcome" à une trentaine d’infrastructures, dont par exemple l’Hôtel de Ville de Luxembourg, l’exposition The Family of Man au château de Clervaux ou encore la gare de Mersch. Pour la première fois, un sentier autopédestre, celui de la commune de Mondercange, fait partie des établissements classés.

Le label "Eurewelcome" est remis aux infrastructures, services et évènements, qui garantissent l’accessibilité pour tous, donc qui tiennent compte, selon le concept du "Design for All", des attentes des visiteurs et hôtes les plus divers. Le label existe depuis 2004, en coopération étroite avec Info-Handicap.

Les infrastructures portant le label garantissent une haute qualité de service. Ils doivent également adhérer à une panoplie de critères dont un emplacement de stationnement pour personnes handicapées, une certaine largeur des portes ou encore un accès sans barrières de l’entrée de l’immeuble.
