Le 1er mars 2012, Jules Hoffmann, biologiste d'origine luxembourgeoise, était élu à l'Académie française. Jeudi lui revint l'honneur de prendre place dans le fauteuil laissé vacant par le décès de l'helléniste Jacqueline de Romilly.

Photo: Anouk Antony The 2011 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine has gone to Luxembourg-born Jules Hoffmann,and Bruce Beutler and who share it with Ralph Steinman for having revolutionised our understanding of the immune system by discovering key principles for its activation.

Peu avant le prix Nobel, il avait reçu la médaille d'or du CNRS, une des plus prestigieuses distinctions scientifiques françaises, et a été récompensé par plusieurs autres prix scientifiques pour la seule année 2011.
