How to Create a Master/Detail View in FileMaker 17

One of FileMaker 17’s new features is the built-in ability to create a Master/Detail view.

A Master/Detail view uses a portal to display the Master List and some detail fields of the selected portal record for a  full view of the data.

In the past, app developers would have created Self-Joins, Portal Filters, etc. in order to accomplish this.

JSON Transactional Edits in FileMaker 16

JSON Transactional Edits in FileMaker 16 | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
FileMaker 16 was just announced this morning and I’m excited to show you a couple of things it can do.

You may remember a couple of posts: FileMaker User Interface Design – Time for a change and Contextual Mode Shifting – It’s a Thing! – Technique which showed us how to have a cleaner design in “Browse Mode” making important information stand out and protecting data but “Edit Mode” allowed fields to be enterable.

Now previous to FileMaker 16 we used global fields for Edit Mode so when the edit icon was clicked the main field values would to global fields.

Clicking “Save” after making changes would copy from the globals back to the main, or clicking “Cancel” would clear the globals out.

This method has been working but we wanted to try something new and the JSON functions in FileMaker 16 have allowed us to do that.

FileMaker®-based vs. Salesforce vs. Hubspot — Which CRM is Best? | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
A CRM is an important tool that can help you streamline your processes and boost profitability.

A good CRM is flexible enough to adapt to whatever you need it to do: track which leads are converting to customers, automate tasks, learn which activities are driving sales, deliver better customer service, etc.

All in an intuitive way that makes the most of automation.

Deciding which CRM to choose can be daunting, because each platform has a variety of capabilities and a spectrum of usability.

In this post, we’ll look at three of the most popular CRM platforms: Salesforce, Hubspot, and FileMaker-based, to help you decide which is best for your business.

Why Use FileMaker Instead of an Out-of-the-Box CRM Solution

Why Use FileMaker Instead of an Out-of-the-Box CRM Solution | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Why Use FileMaker® Instead of an Out-of-the-Box CRM Solution

If you’re looking for a CRM solution to improve your company’s processes and productivity, you’re spoiled for choice.

Capterra, a site that reviews software, lists over 400 products under the CRM category.

And Gartner reported that in 2017, worldwide customer relationship management (CRM) software revenue overtook the previous leader, database management systems (DBMSs), making CRM the largest of all software markets.

So many choices can lead to frustration.

Not all CRMs will have all the features you need, many are expensive to maintain, and most are not fully customizable without a hefty investment in custom programming.

How do you know which one is right for your business?

Rather than trying to find the needle in the haystack only to discover that it lacks an essential feature that you need down the road, consider using FileMaker to create a custom CRM solution that’s specifically designed for your company and its operations. Here’s why the FileMaker platform is ideal for CRMs for many organizations.

Google – Auto Complete using JSON in FIleMaker 16

I am excited to share with you some of the new features now that FileMaker 16 has officially been released.

In this post I thought I would start out simple and show the JSON parsing function coupled with a simple API call which allows for simpler data entry when it comes to entering in an address.

Many of you have probably visited websites where you can start entering in an address and a list of predicted addresses appear.

The more text you enter in the provided field the closer you get to the address you are looking for.

This is the same technique you can use when implementing the Google Places AutoComplete API.

Address Auto Complete

Address Auto-Complete allows a user to type in an address, the auto-complete function will then return a list of possible matching addresses.

If the user sees a matching address they can click on it and populate the info into the appropriate fields.

FileMaker 13 Google Maps API Geocode | The Scarpetta Group, Inc. | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Most developers are familiar with the built in Google mapping features within FileMaker Pro.

However, with FileMaker Pro 13 bringing HTTP POST methods natively into the game, there’s much more we can do by leveraging the Google maps APIs in FileMaker.

So what can we do with FIleMaker 13 Google maps?

In this article, we will look at using address information contained in a FileMaker record, sending a request to the Google maps API version 3 to retrieve the latitude and longitude coordinates for the address and setting those coordinates in the FileMaker record.

Once we have gathered the location data, we can send another request to the Google Maps API to display an interactive single map interface into FileMaker based on the coordinates.
