FileMaker & Tableau | Building Dashboards with Interactivity

FileMaker & Tableau | Building Dashboards with Interactivity | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
If you’ve been working with FileMaker, then I don’t have to sell you on the fact that it’s a great solution to help you manage your data.

Whether you’re an in-house developer, a consultant, or just starting to explore what is possible with this powerful platform, you will at some point come across the need to build in some kind of dashboard.

Maybe your group needs to see sales trends for the last year or perhaps you have a system that tracks projects and want to see the daily average of tasks completed.

In either case, dashboards are a great way to synthesize large amounts of information and provide you with insight in a simple and informative visual design.

...

FileMaker, a popular tool used by small to medium size workgroups, is a great platform for data gathering, curation, and sharing.
It offers a great deal of flexibility and FileMaker, Inc. is continually investing in keeping the application modern (you can check out the roadmap here).
As a rapid application development tool with an approachable scripting language, there is no other tool that comes close – and Tableau is FileMaker’s creative and visual cousin!

FileMaker has some built in charts that serve their purpose, but Tableau’s ability to compliment FileMaker, visually, takes the platform to another level.
What it allows you to do with just a few clicks is extremely impressive, and the product continues to evolve at a rapid pace.

Implementing a Web Viewer Integration | FileMaker - Soliant Consulting

Implementing a Web Viewer Integration | FileMaker - Soliant Consulting | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
The Web Viewer Integrations library is meant to give you the ability to extract something from this file and push it into your own solution in a relative easy few steps. The difficult process of working each integration out for FileMaker has been resolved, and the step-by-step guide will help you bring any of these into your own custom app. After building this file, I implemented the photo album into a client’s file. The process took about 30 minutes to fully set up the integration.

Let’s take a look and review how to push from the library to your own custom app.

Web Viewer Integrations Library Overview | FileMaker - Soliant Consulting | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
The Web Viewer Integrations library is a file meant for anyone’s use in their own learning and as a resource for deeper, richer functionality to any custom app.

But it does take a moment to walk through to learn how it is set up.
The library is set up to give you the ability to find an integration that you need and push it into your own custom app with very little effort.

As a test, I was able to push the photo album into a client’s app in about 30 minutes.

That time includes setting up the table structure, importing the code and revising the script for the specific app. One-half hour is not bad for a slick-looking photo album.

Let’s walk through the file and let me acquaint you with it.

Web Viewer Integrations Library | FileMaker - Soliant Consulting | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
I seem to have developed an obsession with the web viewer in FileMaker.

That fact is surprising because it was only three years ago that I knew nothing about the object.

Back then, I decided that, while continuing to learn FileMaker, I’d start to learn how to do more in my custom apps with the the languages of the web.

Every chance I got, I’d try to implement a Google map or a chart either into a project or in a simple demo file.

At first it was painfully slow; trying to get a chart into FileMaker via the web viewer was too complex and was overkill in the time spent on the implementation.

Never one to back away from a challenge, I pushed through, and eventually, it became much easier.

The object became more fun to work with, and I pushed myself to try and do more with it.

Over the last two years, Apple has quietly but steadily made big progress with Swift, its super-popular programming language for iPhone apps, lauded as both faster and more elegant than anything else out there.

But it's not its first:

For example, you can use the “Google Auto-Complete Address” integration to use the power of Google to get the exact full address as the user starts to type it in as shown in Figure 1.

FileMaker and eCommerce Integration – Part 1

FileMaker and eCommerce Integration – Part 1 | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Many of our (Databuzz) small business customers have both a physical presence and an online presence when it comes to selling their goods and services.

They  might have:

  • a physical retail store where customers can come and purchase goods in person
  • a mail order store where they take orders by mail, phone and fax and send the goods to the purchaser once they have paid
  • an online store which takes orders, processes the credit card transactions and notifies the business to fulfil the orders
  • a popup store/market store that runs every month or for short periods of time

When the business is starting up, or when they are adding a new method of selling goods and services, the tendency is for each of these stores to operate as their own silo.

This ultimately leads to a lot of data duplication/double entry in multiple systems as the business deals with orders coming in from multiple store presences.

Quite often we see the following workflow:

  • physical and mail order/phone orders are processed in the central office FileMaker CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solution
  • online/eCommerce orders are processed via the online store attached to the customer’s website. The business is notified of new orders via email and these are then entered into the central office CRM system by customer service staff who then notify the accounts department to create an accounting entry in Xero or MYOB etc.

We wouldn’t generally recommend to customer’s that they use FileMaker to run their online eCommerce store, so there’s no problem with having the physical presence and the online presence separate (and it’s highly advisable from a security standpoint).

However this leads to the problem of scattered information and ad hoc processes – wouldn’t it be better if all the information was in one place and you could see all the physical orders and online orders from the central FileMaker CRM?

Could you save time and increase productivity by not having to manually re-enter all the online orders in both the main FileMaker CRM as well as your accounting software?
