Updating FileMaker data with Zebra mobile devices

We were recently working on a project where we needed to verify order fulfillment and staging prior to pickup by the shipping carriers.

In most instances, we’d use FileMaker Go on an iPod Touch or iPad for mobile users, but this project required that we scan barcodes quickly for optimum performance.

Building a Barcode System in FileMaker Pro

Building a Barcode System in FileMaker Pro | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

I had a discussion recently from someone wanting to know how to setup FileMaker Pro with a barcode scanning system.

I have setup a FileMaker Pro system called PassTracker that employs barcodes to keep track of membership activity at gyms.

I was able to provide him with an overview of how to do this and thought it might be worth repeating for anyone wanting to get started with barcodes.

No demo file this time, but hopefully the overview will get you started and through most of the major hurdles.

To employ Barcodes with a FileMaker Pro system, three or four things are required:

- A barcode font
- A barcode scanner (or FileMaker Go *)
- A FileMaker Pro database system setup to create and input barcodes
- Optional – A dedicated computer to scan in the barcodes

Didier Daglinckx's insight:
A post from 2012 but still very valuable.

* FileMaker Go will allow you to scan directly.

Bar Code Scanning in FileMaker Pro 13

Bar Code Scanning in FileMaker Pro 13 | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

One of the new features of FileMaker Go 13 is the ability to scan bar codes directly into the database.

It is a nice new feature but probably won’t replace a dedicated scanner in many situations — here is why.

Quick demo showing how to use an iPhone / iPad as a barcode scanner for a desktop.

This saves buying barcode scanner if you already have an i device.

Unfortunately it doesn't work on Android - though a custom app can be made to do it.

Barcode Scanning in FileMaker Go

Barcode Scanning in FileMaker Go | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Recently I’ve been doing some research into doing barcode scanning in FileMaker Go.

While this is something that isn’t possible natively with FileMaker, there are companies that have already looked into this problem and have created solutions.

The one I’m looking at today is an iOS app called CNS Barcode, released by Comm-unity Networking systems (which costs 9.99 at the time this post is written).

It’s not terribly difficult to set up, but it requires some knowledge of the FMP protocol.

We discussed this in a previous blog post on creating shortcuts to a database, but one thing that wasn’t discussed was using this protocol to run scripts.
