When Vinepower sends its workers into Marlborough's vineyards for the next harvest, they will go armed with iPads and a technological edge.

The Blenheim-based viticultural contracting outfit employs 250 staff at peak times, providing year-round services such as pruning and thinning. Recently it overhauled the way information is collected on the job, replacing a time-consuming, manual process with a tailor-made IT solution.

At its heart is a FileMaker database christened "Vinny". Out in the field, supervisors enter the details of workers and vine rows into iPads, which are later synced with Vinny.
