An Often-Overlooked Pillar Of Software Design: User Experience | Portage Bay Solutions

An Often-Overlooked Pillar Of Software Design: User Experience | Portage Bay Solutions | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Before understanding the importance of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) in custom software design, we first need to understand that these concepts - often used interchangeably as UI/UX - are two distinct areas.

It is wise to approach the concepts of UX and UI design independently, though they will both be vital to a successful final product.

UI refers to the aesthetic elements by which people interact

While UX is about the user's experience with a product or service

In some companies, a designer is responsible for wearing both hats, while in others, there are separate designers for each focus. Regardless of the situation, the ultimate goal of the designer or designers is to create functional, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing products.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Using Invisible Tab Panels for Pick Lists

Hiding in Plain Sight: Using Invisible Tab Panels for Pick Lists | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Recently I attended a FileMaker UI/UX Masterclass (UI = User Interface, UX = User Experience) session put on by FileMaker Canada in Vancouver.

The session’s main presenter was Yann Liqueur-Salzédo from Infografix in Nice, France. Yann’s innovative design work wowed the crowd at the 2012 FileMaker DevCon in Florida.

He has recently launched a web site that aims to provide design inspiration to FileMaker Developers atFileMakerUI.com.

The web site is just getting started, but is worth a look to check it out for some ideas.

As is sometimes the case, one of the gems of this session came out of the question period at the end of the session—Yann was prompted to ‘pop the hood’ on one of his demos and reveal one of his interface tricks—the use of a hidden tab panel to hide and show interface elements on the display.

This technique is especially useful when space is at a premium, for instance in a iPhone or iPad interface, or where large number of alternatives have to be presented in a compact manner.
