“TWD, Translate With DeepL” is an add-on for FileMaker Pro, which makes it effortless to translate text into other languages. Many FileMaker applications can benefit from multilingualism, for example for the user interface, for document output and much more. However, translations are labor-intensive and require good linguistic know-how. “TWD, Translate With DeepL” is a free add-on for FileMaker, with which translations can be automated. The add-on translates using DeepL and uses their API.

Betmar Languages, Inc. serves both the translation and on-site interpreter markets as well as converting audio/video to other languages. They must keep detailed records of their wide range of clients from manufacturers to law firms, state and local government agencies, marketing firms, ad agencies, and other type of businesses across most industries.
FileMaker was the ideal platform to make this happen.

Recently we built a feature in a client’s FileMaker solution that involved sending written messages in both English and Spanish, starting by selecting a boilerplate template. The users would then edit the message as necessary before sending. We created a few test templates by composing a message in English, then we used Google Translate in a browser to get the Spanish version, and stored both versions in a record in the template table. Our initial understanding was that users of this solution speak and write both English and Spanish, so editing the boilerplate messages would not be a problem. But that turned out not to be the case.

"I'll never have to do this myself" so I only half listened. Now I have a client who needs multilingual field labels, titles, button text, tooltips and placeholders. I'm going to walk readers through the process of determining the best solution for my particular client so you can learn the way I did. You may have to adjust your approach to your client needs but this should get you started.
