Teaching Pickers to be Patient

Teaching Pickers to be Patient | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
FileMaker is a very responsive application – you ask it to do something and it responds pretty quickly.

But sometimes, we want FileMaker to be more patient and wait until we’re done before it does something.

In effect, we want FileMaker to practice a bit of patience. We’re going to talk about pickers today, and […]

That’s what a picker lets you do. It gives you a simple interface – usually, a search field is used to filter the list, so you can narrow a list of 500 types of [whatever you’re looking for] down to just a few possibilities. This can make it much easier for a user to select the correct data to put into the field, especially when the list of possible choices is large or will grow over time.

Performing a find in Claris FileMaker is one of the most common actions as a user and developer.

But have you ever really taken a few moments to test, compare, and understand the multitude of options available?

Rather than reading through extensive manuals, we visually demonstrate simple and complex searches with all of the operators and combinations of Find, Constrain, and Extend functions.

Knowing when to use the best techniques can save so much time and frustration for years to come.

The Philosophy of FileMaker - Snapshot Saves

The Philosophy of FileMaker - Snapshot Saves | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

According to the FileMaker online help, the Snapshot Link feature saves a found set of records.

But, it saves so much more including the current record, layout, sort order and the mode.

The basic idea is to save a Snapshot Link and send it to a colleague via email so they can see what you are viewing.

So much more efficient than trying to tell someone in another building or state how to recreate a found set.

In this article, we're going to use Snapshot Links to save and restore multiple found sets for future retrieval.

Didier Daglinckx's insight:

Also look at

1) Preserving Found Sets
2) Saving a Found Set
3) Collecting Unique Values

+ restoring the actual find criteria will be published soon (as of Aug 2019).

What Makes Search Successful? | Soliant Consulting - FileMaker

What Makes Search Successful? | Soliant Consulting - FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Many of us are accustomed to the infinitely-flexible searching offered by FileMaker: any field you can have on a screen can be searchable, more or less, and multiple “search requests” and the constrain/extend menu commands add extensive Boolean control.

But that is definitely not the norm for online searching in 2016, and it’s certainly not on offer in any site or app that I can think of offhand.

Instead we have the widely-understood convention of a single search box.

We type search terms in, click a button, and results come back. That’s easy to understand, at least.

Whether or not it is easy to use, or useful in generating successful outcomes, is another question.

FileMaker Power Finds | Extensitech

FileMaker Power Finds | Extensitech | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Power Finds

I’ve been working with FileMaker for a really long time, about 20 years now. For the last dozen or so years, I’ve been a full-time developer of FileMaker solutions. I spend a lot of time developing cool new solutions with neat features and interfaces, for a lot of different business applications.  I sometimes forget that not everyone eats, sleeps and breathes FileMaker from the moment the wake to the moment they sleep (and sometimes even after that, in dreams).

Because of all that, I sometimes get so focused on the latest new technique or strategy that I take some really powerful, basic functions of FileMaker for granted. A prime example of this is the power of the Find mode.

Usually, my first clue is that a client is overly concerned about being able to sort records. Only then do I realize that they’re wasting time sorting long lists and scrolling through them, because they don’t realize they can do a better Find an get to exactly what they want. Sort is great for a small set of records, and of course it’s essential for a good report, but if you’re sorting hundreds of records and then scrolling to find what you’re looking for, then… how else to say it?… you’re doing it wrong.

Product findability is key to any e-commerce business — after all, if customers can’t find a product, they can’t buy it.

Therefore, at Baymard Institute, we invested eight months conducting a large-scale usability research study on the product-finding experience.

We set out to explore how users navigate, find and select products on e-commerce websites, using the home page and category navigation.
