One of the most useful FileMaker features introduced in the last few years is the popover (if you aren’t familiar with them, Howard Schlossberg’s presentation provides an excellent introduction).
In the standard implementation, you click once to display the popover, and then click anywhere outside the popover to dismiss it.

Let me start out by stating that I love popovers. I can cut down on the number of layouts a solution needs when I can just serve the data right up where the user needs it. It’s faster, easier, and leaner. Unfortunately, there are limitations when it comes to working with popovers. There were two child tables related to each other. The first thing that popped in my mind was just to pop a portal on the popover to show all the related child records. Well, that doesn’t work. Vertical navigation is once again popular on the web, particularly on data driven sites. In FileMaker, the typical navigation pattern is often a horizontal menu bar. Some developers incorporate vertical navigation in their systems with the use of a portal. Unfortunately, the portal alone is limited because it can only work on a form view; it doesn't work in a list or table view. The popover layout object in FileMaker Pro 13 can provide a more dynamic vertical navigation.

Today we’ll be exploring the concept of using popovers as modal dialogs in FileMaker.
FileMaker has had this functionality with the advanced window styles for a while now, but many users find that opening a new window is frequently undesirable. This is especially true in Windows environments, where new windows don’t behave as nicely as they do on OS X.
It feels less like you’re breaking from your existing context, and you don’t run into the issues that might occur when opening a completely new window.
For the purposes of this exercise, we’ll focus on the styling to get things looking good!

This little technique show how we can exploit the FileMaker native Popover-object to obtain a fixed zone on your list-layout. Configure the outer shadow to make it cover the remaining pixels on the edges of the popover panel.

I'm sure many of you have heard the news of the newest line of the FileMaker platform! The FileMaker 13 product line offers developers and users a new set of features that were either limited or non-existent in the past. In other words, FileMaker has delivered a lot of new, shiny objects with which to play!
Now learning a new version of FileMaker can be time consuming.
From popovers to WebDirect, the quantity of changes (both big and small) really do add up. And like any new feature in software, there can be a lot to know.
