Building a Dynamic and Robust FileMaker System | YouTube (4:46)

Building A Dynamic And Robust FileMaker System

Have you ever inherited a system built by someone else, changed a field’s name and everything stopped working?

The issue, hardcoded names used in indirection, makes the system fragile. FileMaker provides developers many methods to add flexibility using indirection.

However when these instances of indirection are not treated properly they will raise all sorts of problems.

In this article we will discuss good practices regarding indirection that will help you build a dynamic and robust FileMaker system.

In this video we will discuss good practice regarding indirection that will help you build a dynamic yet robust FileMaker system by looking at a particular common scenario: using ExecuteSQL to grab data from a FileMaker system.

Why should you work the way that a program (or programmer) has decided.

It's your business and you should be able to run it the way you want to and the programs you use should accommodate that.

We need an Entity Relationship diagram, stat

First, we realised we needed a database. Then, it took about a picosecond to realise that what we need is FileMaker Pro 14.

This is a tool for making databases from simple ones like ours up on to the tools that international corporations use.

Whether you're a corporate level user or starting out, though, the steps involved in creating and using a new database are the same -- they're the steps and considerations we're using in this project to build a Job Book database.

One thing has come up since we began this series with an introduction last week.

Planning a Database with Filemaker

Planning a Database with Filemaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Whether you are planning a Filemaker database or not poor planning results in time-wasting throughout all phases of development and often leads to an unusable database.

Parts might work, but it could take longer to do the job using the database than it did to do it manually – and the database might provide less accurate results to boot.

Don’t let this happen the following guide is meant just as a starting point and is aimed to give the reader a nudge in the right direction.

Future-Proofing Your Development Project | FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Part One in the Series: Software Development Guide for Business Leaders

Thinking about developing a custom application?

Let’s talk about future-proofing.

When you do as much custom development as we do, we hear a lot about future-proofing in development.

The average expected lifetime of software that our customers expect is between 5 and 7 years.

When a system is designed to last that long, a considerable amount of effort should be invested into planning.

For a business that plans on developing a custom application, it’s important to future-proof your project to avoid costly application redesigns and to improve application longevity.

Future-proof through planning, honest reviews of your in-house skills and capabilities, striking a balance of in-house support and outsourced development, and by avoiding proprietary tools and frameworks.

Future-Proofing Checklist

  • What is the life expectancy of your final product?
  • Have you assigned a Project Manager?
  • Have you set realistic project goals, budgets and timelines?
  • Have you done an assessment of your in-house resources?
  • Does the project rely on proprietary tools?
  • Have you assigned a Project Manager?
  • Is your outsourced partner large enough to roll with a contingency?
  • Do you have a software update plan?

The Dummy's guide to Database Design | FileMaker

The Dummy's guide to Database Design | FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
I was reflecting on the number of times that I have been told "Well I will give you the data and it can't be that much work to build a database".

In my mind (apart from the indignant inner rage that this causes) this is like a plumber turning up with your new boiler and radiator and having a new central heating system ready in a matter of minutes.

So I thought I would put together a list of the main points that I undertake through to build a proper system.
