We recently had a request from a customer to generate snail mail letters and reminders from their FileMaker solution. Rather than generic bulk mail, this is highly personalized correspondence–the kind of thing you’d normally send by email–they just wanted this done with physical mail. Think of a PDF or receipt containing order history, for example. While we love the power of API’s and what they can accomplish, and Postalocity does have an API available, we discovered that we could also simply email them a PDF for processing.

When creating a PDF from FileMaker you have the ability to append your new PDF onto an existing PDF. This feature was introduced in FileMaker 8, and is extremely helpful. However, what if you have 2 (or more) existing PDFs that you need to combine? What if you want the first PDF to be generated from FileMaker, but the 2nd one, for example, is uploaded by the user?

Interactive containers were introduced in FileMaker 12 to enable users to view the content of PDFs, audit files and video files directly in FileMaker Pro. A common use case for interactive containers is to use them to scroll through pages of a PDF, zoom in and out, and copy text, all without having to leave FileMaker Pro. For example, PDFs only show their first page and to view the full content the user will have to tap on the container field and choose “View” to open up the PDF file in a PDF reader app.
