Wouldn't it be nice to have a button bar that you could place on every layout that handles basic FileMaker navigation and would automatically update itself when you make changes like rearranging, renaming, or adding layouts. I’ve seen other approaches over time, although not all have met all requirements that I would want of such a tool.

Here’s a FileMaker 14 navigation sidebar that uses the new button bar object to dynamically stay in sync with the layouts in your file. It also uses a slide control for a cool animated show/hide effect, and you can option-click the “hide” arrow for a compacted icon-only version. This technique uses only native FileMaker functionality, no plugins, custom functions or web viewers. And you don’t even need a script trigger on every layout; it’s very simple. In contrast, this is a simple system that looks great and keeps your code easy to work with.

At the german Filemaker Conference 2016 in Salzburg I (Kursiv-software) have presented, in a single file, 3 variations to create a dynamic navigation in Filemaker Pro.
This example file can be downloaded. Please note that this is just a study, and not a ready-to-go solution. Use the ideas to create your own solution.

An easily expandable menu system compliments of Claus Lavendt of Datamanix. Claus uses the new, expandable FileMaker 14 menu bar to make a cross platform (Desktop, WebDirect, iPad, and iPhone), lightweight menu bar that can expand up to 20 items.

With its newest release, FileMaker has given developers the opportunity to create solutions with a refined, polished look, while simultaneously providing new, much-needed functionality. One way it does this is through two new layout parts, called “Top Navigation” and “Bottom Navigation”, providing layout parts that can be fixed to the top and bottom of the screen and parts that don’t move when scrolling or zooming.
