Creating complex documents the easy way | FileMaker tip - Michael Rocharde

Creating complex documents the easy way | FileMaker tip - Michael Rocharde | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Businesses all over the world and of every size and type spend countless hours every day typing the same thing over again.

Contracts and legal documents are classic examples of this.

The tools of choice are word processors and spreadsheets, every one of which is an individual document that has to be filed using a complex hierarchical filing system designed so that any document can be, relatively, easily retrieved.

Copying and pasting, from one document to another is commonplace but often it is easier to just type something again than find it in another document.

But why would any business or person want to type the same thing over and over again.

Apart from the time wasted, and time is the most valuable commodity any of us has, it is frustrating and fraught with errors, not only spelling ones but inconsistency because somebody wasn’t paying attention.

The reason that businesses do this and use Microsoft Word or Excel is that they simply do not know there is a better way of doing things but there is.

It’s called FileMaker and is the most powerful tool for business that you’ve probably never heard of.

The Process of Development | FileMaker - Michael Rocharde

The Process of Development | FileMaker - Michael Rocharde | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
For any piece of FileMaker™ functionality to work properly, there are, often, a lot of different steps that have to be completed for it to look easy.

Since most people who don’t work with FileMaker™, or any database program for that matter, are completely unfamiliar with what is happening behind the scenes or, as we developers refer to it, ‘under the hood’, I thought that I would take you through what is actually involved in adding functionality to an existing system.

Writing a book

Writing a book | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Writing a book

Four years ago, I published my first book, FileMaker & Me.

It was an ebook sold through the Apple Bookstore.

The subject was FileMaker with an emphasis on interface design, a particular passion of mine, and was about my 25 year journey as a FileMaker developer.

It was something that I had wanted to write for a few years but had never found the right medium.

Then, Apple released iBooksAuthor and it was exactly what I was looking for, allowing me to embed videos and animations and all that good stuff.

So, I set to writing and 6 weeks later the book was ready and it was published.

Much to my surprise, it sold very well and ... (read more on his blog post)

Date Magic | Michael Rocharde - FileMaker

Date Magic | Michael Rocharde - FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

It’s a common scenario.

You’ve got a reservation system of some kind or another and you have a limited number of resources available.

When you add a reservation (for a specific date), you want to be able to only select the resources that are available; in other words, they haven’t already been booked for another reservation on that same date.

This is not a terribly complicated scenario but you may find it a little difficult to get your head around; I certainly did.

However, it is a really powerful, and useful, technique that has many different applications so it’s worth making the effort.

So, let’s give it a whirl.

What a FileMaker™ system can do for a business

What a FileMaker™ system can do for a business | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
As developers, we rarely see, or understand, the difference that what we do can make to our clients businesses.  We deliver the solution, support it and change it but that’s, generally, about it.

I’ve just returned from spending two days with a client on site.  While I was there I took the opportunity to do video interviews with the owner and the 4 department heads.  The video that follows is the edited highlights from those sessions.  I think you’ll find it very interesting; I certainly did.

Parsing Data in FileMaker

Parsing Data in FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
No, parsing is not a spelling mistake; it’s a term used to describe separating data into different elements.

In this short video, we’re going to separate out a single address field, into separate address, city, state and zip fields, using FileMaker’s enormously powerful replace function.

I’ve broken the steps down into very easy to follow ones and this technique can be used in a lot of different situations so you should find it useful; that is, if you aren’t already doing this type of stuff on a daily basis.

FileMaker 19 - A Revolution in the Making

FileMaker 19 - A Revolution in the Making

May 25, 2020

John Mark Osborne and Michael Rocharde are proud to release a special 2 hour episode discussing the release of FileMaker 19 and what it means for Claris, the developer community and ultimately its customers.

While, on the surface and at first glance, there doesn't appear to be all that much that is new, a closer look reveals a version that is about to revolutionize the way that solutions are developed.

With our regular guest, Marc Larochelle of Productive Computing, we discuss every aspect of the FileMaker 19 release which is new in many ways not least of which is that there will now be incremental releases every few months instead of a big annual release.

Not all of the new functionality is fully realized yet but will be coming soon and it is not only beyond exciting but has the potential to make FileMaker a very viable Enterprise solution with a much broader acceptance in the corporate world and the complete integration with JavaScript means that we'll be able to insert fully realized JaveScript calendars, Kanban boards and so much more.

Buckle up.

Paradigm Shifts in FileMaker Development | YouTube (3'13")

This short video explains the term 'paradigm shift' and then illustrates two ways that NautilusFM shifts the paradigm in developing with FileMaker.

Just because it's always been done that way doesn't mean it’s the best or only way to do something!

NautilusFM is a new development framework for FileMaker where everything happens on a single screen.

The fundamental principle of it is that "if you never leave home, you can't ever get lost." It has been released under an Open Source license (BSD) to the community and has already been downloaded in 25 countries.

The Philosophy of FileMaker - Context & Relationships

The Philosophy of FileMaker - Context & Relationships | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Context is everything!

Haven’t you ever had something you said taken out of context and then tried, desperately, to figure out how to get yourself out of the hole you just, inadvertently, dug for yourself?

The same goes with relationships.

In life, as in FileMaker, they can be tricky and, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can get yourself in a whole mess of trouble.

This article is really for newbies to FileMaker; anybody who has been working with FileMaker for a while will, or should, know this stuff so it’s very basic but, hopefully, it will have some value.

Why FileMaker™? | Youtube (2'54")

Why FileMaker™? | Youtube (2'54") | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Of all the database applications out there, FileMaker has numerous advantages.

Firstly it is cross platform which means it runs on Windows, Macs and IOS devices, using FileMaker Go (which I refer to as a thin client).

This gives any company that is using it multiple deployment options and can be used on a mixed network effortlessly.

Compare this to Microsoft’s Access which only runs on Windows.

And before you ask, no, it doesn’t run on Android (hell will freeze over before that happens) but ,you can run the Windows version of it on tablets like Surface Pro. FileMaker also has its own web technology called WebDirect which means that you can develop a solution, install it on FileMaker Server and then access that through any web browser without those users having to install FileMaker on their machines.  WebDirect pretty faithfully reproduces the interface that the developer has designed and puts it straight on the web page.

Sure, it has its limitations but it is a phenomenal tool and is only going to get better.

Secondly FileMaker is a RADE (Rapid Application Development Environment) which means that you can develop a solution incredibly quickly in comparison to other programs.
