Spatial data collected in the home opens up big possibilities for advertisers, provided they respect consumers' privacy, argues UM's Lawrence Dodds

Our homes are finally getting more connected.

What was once a folly for tech geeks and early adopters, an increasing amount of households across the globe are now incorporating smart speakers, fridges, TVs and various other devices into their homes.

As our houses and the devices we use get more aware, the amount of data, which gadgets use to perform a useful service, grows, and the possibilities of what we can do as advertisers and brands expands.

"Movie time."

• Siri, Apple's personal digital assistant blinks into action. 
• The blinds go down.
• The lights dim.
• Your home theater system pulses to life.

What we're witnessing, aside from a friend showing off his hotly connected new digs, is a demonstration of Apple's HomeKit in action.

Originally announced in 2014, HomeKit is now mature and ready for the mainstream.

And if we're any indication, it's going to flood the holiday gift lists.

The Home app makes it easy to control all of your home’s smart accessories from your favorite iOS devices with a touch, automatically, or with Siri.

... Sure, Apple has lots of work to do with HomeKit.

They need to make devices work better together and they need to start doing more market education.
