Think Your App Is Beautiful? Not Without User Experience Design | Smashing Magazine - Filemaker tip

Think Your App Is Beautiful? Not Without User Experience Design | Smashing Magazine - Filemaker tip | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
In the mid-2000s, digital designers tended to fall into one of two buckets: user experience design (UX) and visual design (although titles varied).

Visual design was, in a sense, applied graphic design, and it brought UX to life in pixels.

...

Great design is a synthesis of art and science, of aesthetics, usability and a deep understanding of user needs and behaviors. To succeed, we need a balance. Beauty that isn’t part of holistic, effective product design will be wasted.

Button Image Masks in FileMaker 13 | the beezwax buzz

Button Image Masks in FileMaker 13 | the beezwax buzz | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

When you've been using FileMaker as long as I have, you know we've done all kinds of crazy things to get image masks to work on our buttons.

For example, we would use a set of grouped native FileMaker line objects to cover an image just to get an ugly looking mask.

I hope that not many developers suffered for too long using that technique.

The Running Test | SeedCode - Filemaker tip

The Running Test | SeedCode - Filemaker tip | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Testing code is one thing, though far from straightforward, but how do we test our ideas. (I’m not talking about validating ideas with customers as in Lean Startup, but testing an idea against your gut. Is there a way tomeasure that?)

When you’re small, opportunity costs are huge–your best customer is another customer you didn’t meet–so how do you know at a real gut level if you’re making a decision for the right reasons or if you’re reacting to fear? How you do test if you’re aligned with your idea?

Time Scales, Kaizen, and Urgency | Filemaker tip

Time Scales, Kaizen, and Urgency | Filemaker tip | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Most of us have little practice looking more than a few months in the future, nor do our calendars make that easy. We're building something to help

Doing some  financial planning a few months ago, I was thinking about how to budget for all the stuff we’re trying to get done next year–remodeling on the house, some travel, finishing the van/mobile-office/surf wagon–and I just couldn’t get the numbers to come out right.

I had this spreadsheet showing how much we’d have available each quarter but it just wasn’t working. And I was getting pretty stressed out about it.

But then I added 6 more months to my spreadsheet and everything balanced out. “I could just finish the van in 2015” — why had that never occurred to me?

Changing the scale I was considering literally made the problem go away.

Popovers and Vertical Navigation | Filemaker - Part 1 - YouTube

Vertical navigation is once again popular on the web, particularly on data driven sites. In FileMaker, the typical navigation pattern is often a horizontal menu bar.

Some developers incorporate vertical navigation in their systems with the use of a portal. Unfortunately, the portal alone is limited because it can only work on a form view; it doesn't work in a list or table view.

The popover layout object in FileMaker Pro 13 can provide a more dynamic vertical navigation.
