With the release of the latest generation of FileMaker Cloud, Claris has taken a big leap into cloud-based infrastructure on the FileMaker platform.
However, using the name FileMaker Cloud, when there is another legacy version of FileMaker Cloud, as well as FileMaker Server on the cloud, things start to get confusing.
I’ll try and outline some of the key differences in this article.

Claris has just released a smaller version of FileMaker Cloud called FileMaker Cloud Essentials.

The first version of FileMaker Cloud was released back in March 2017 and it brought something quite new to the platform.
It allowed to consume relatively little resources while being lightly used, and at the same time was ready for rapid burst of power when you needed it. Based on the user feedback and experience, which included steep learning curve to set up and administer AWS, FileMaker (now Claris) announced its successor at the FileMaker Developer Conference 2019.
FileMaker Cloud 2, finally released on the 30th of October 2019, removes all the technical difficulty and delivers an easy to use hosting platform for any custom FileMaker app. All the complexity is handled by Claris.
Let me put the other aspects, such as cost or security, aside for now, and focus solely on performance.

FileMaker Cloud gives you the the simplicity and performance of the FileMaker Platform without spending time and resources deploying and maintaining a server This was extended to Europe, the Middle East and Africa in March 2017 (AWS regions of Ireland and Frankfurt). According to FileMaker Inc’s product roadmap the next AWS Regions to be supported will be Japan, Australia, and Montreal.

Yesterday (28 sept 2016), FileMaker, Inc. took the wraps off of the latest addition to the FileMaker platform: FileMaker Cloud.
It was announced at FileMaker DevCon 2016 in July, but we were not able to talk about it publicly until now.
This post will be an overview of what FileMaker Cloud is, how it compares to existing offerings, reasons why it may or may not be a good fit for you, what it costs, things to watch out for, plus other resources if you want to dig deeper.
