In this video, we discuss what is automatically created with an Add-On table and the 11 different types of Add-On tables.

The FileMaker platform keeps getting better.

The 2018 yearly release schedule gives us plenty to look forward to in new features, and the timeline gives us plenty of time to get to know what has been included.

One of the new features is called “Default Fields”.

We can now set up default fields to be created with each table in each file.

There are plenty of articles out there already, and the knowledge-base article is out now.

But I’ve seen some questions in the forums, sometimes the same ones.

I did some research and put together the answers here.

One of the most important features of FileMaker 17 is the “current found set portal”.

It makes it easy and fast to display the list of found records on the layout (Master/Detail).

Not only does it display them, but it allows to browse records with a single click, without having to write a script or add a button.

How to Create a Master/Detail View in FileMaker 17

One of FileMaker 17’s new features is the built-in ability to create a Master/Detail view.  

A Master/Detail view uses a portal to display the Master List and some detail fields of the selected portal record for a  full view of the data.

In the past, app developers would have created Self-Joins, Portal Filters, etc. in order to accomplish this.

The new master-detail portal is one of the biggest features in the newest release of the platform.

It provides us a built in way to show this common user interface pattern.

We can throw out complicated self-joins or other amazing-at-the-time methods and instead rely on FileMaker’s way of showing the current found set in a list on a form view layout.

Sure FileMaker is fun to hack on and make it do crazy things, but now that we get new features every year, it is harder to pretend that hacking crazy stuff is a good value for our customers. 

This feature is really good and really simple, and that is a rare combination.

The FileMaker Data Migration Tool is new to FileMaker 17 and is a command line tool.

Our FM Data Migration Assistant is a free tool we built to give developers an intuitive interface (wrapper app) to easily use FileMaker's Data Migration Tool (spares you from the command line).

FileMaker 17 introduces a useful new feature called “Create Directories” when creating files.

This works with saving a copy or clone of the database, as well as exporting PDFs or text files.

I decided this was a good time to update my old Backup database script. 

I use this script when developing locally.

If I am about to make a major change to a layout etc, I can invoke this to give me a date and timestamped version of the database.

This script could also be useful when developing for people who are using the database in a stand alone environment (ie. not on FileMaker Server), running it with FileMaker Pro client.

Because you don’t know much about the client’s environment, such as where they want to backup to or the folder they want to backup to, it is useful to have a general purpose script like this. 

The only thing that took a bit of work was figuring out where iCloud Drive stores it’s files.
