Create Directories Via Script Step With FileMaker

Create Directories Via Script Step With FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

One of the great strengths of FileMaker is its ability to export data to a user’s computer in a variety of formats.

...

with FileMaker Pro Advanced 17 (and up), allowing much-improved organization of scripted exports.

Now, when you specify the path, exporting script-steps will create a new directory if it doesn’t already exist.

You can even create nested directories.

How To Create Custom Headers in FileMaker 18

How To Create Custom Headers in FileMaker 18 | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

...

Custom headers are useful, particularly for end users, because they provide intelligible header names when downloaded FileMaker files are opened in other applications.

We developers don't always use intuitive field names when we're in the heat of custom app development.

It's usually a bunch of geeky gibberish only the coder can understand.

FileMaker 18 actually simplifies our custom header export process a bit, thanks to a few of the new script steps that this version offers.

Exporting Data to iCal, Outlook, Google Calendar, etc.

Exporting Data to iCal, Outlook, Google Calendar, etc. | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

Exporting Data to iCal, Outlook, Google Calendar, etc.

The other day I needed to export some appointments from FileMaker to iCal.

I’d never done this before, but I did a bit of reading on Wikipedia and elsewhere, and it turns out to be fairly straight forward.

I don’t claim that what follows is in any way authoritative, just that it works… and not just with iCal, but with Outlook, Google Calendar and any other program that recognizes the iCalendar format.

Exporting From FileMaker to Excel Basics

Exporting From FileMaker to Excel Basics | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Exporting data from FileMaker to Excel is simple when exporting from a single table.

Exporting related data can also be quick and easy but it might not always come out as expected.

I am going to walk through a few basic steps to export related data in a format that makes sense.

Backup FileMaker 17 Databases to the Cloud

Backup FileMaker 17 Databases to the Cloud | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

FileMaker 17 introduces a useful new feature called “Create Directories” when creating files.

This works with saving a copy or clone of the database, as well as exporting PDFs or text files.

I decided this was a good time to update my old Backup database script.

I use this script when developing locally.

If I am about to make a major change to a layout etc, I can invoke this to give me a date and timestamped version of the database.

This script could also be useful when developing for people who are using the database in a stand alone environment (ie. not on FileMaker Server), running it with FileMaker Pro client.

Because you don’t know much about the client’s environment, such as where they want to backup to or the folder they want to backup to, it is useful to have a general purpose script like this.

The only thing that took a bit of work was figuring out where iCloud Drive stores it’s files.

See below for the solution.

From database to hypertext: exporting from FileMaker Pro to Storyspace

From database to hypertext: exporting from FileMaker Pro to Storyspace

If you’re not careful, you can waste a lot of your time just trying to move data between different platforms and apps. Although I love working in Storyspace, it is not always available, or most suitable for a given task, even if I want my data to end up as hypertext within it.

Just now I need to enter quite a lot of information about events. Although I can do some of that at my Mac, I want to be able to do so when more mobile, on my brand new iPad Pro when out enjoying the fresh air, for example. Although Tinderbox is ideally geared to exporting data in different and customisable forms, there is no (obvious) app available for both OS X and iOS which will deliver data well to Storyspace, for example.

With FileMaker Pro 15 just hitting the streets, and its wonderful free iOS partner FileMaker Go 15, this article describes the first stage of a project to create a custom database front end which will feed formatted content into Storyspace 3 and Tinderbox 6.

Didier Daglinckx's insight:

Storyspace 3 is a tool for writing and reading hypertext narrative, for fictional and nonfictional stories told with links.

StorySpace can be found at http://www.eastgate.com/storyspace/

Tinderbox stores and organizes your notes, plans, and ideas.
