DevCon 2015: Data Modeling Beyond Anchor Buoy -... | FileMaker Community

Data modeling is a critical part of FileMaker development, and keeping an organized table occurrence graph is key to rapid and bug-free development.

Anchor Buoy (AB) is arguably the most widely adopted FileMaker development convention because it gives an excellent visual pattern and language for tackling this.

However, we want to make sure that a strict adherence to the AB pattern isn’t limiting our access to powerful tools in the platform.

We’ll look at some new pattern ideas like universal context and the selector-connector to see if we can keep the organizational benefits of AB while unlocking all the power the graph has to offer.

Introduction to data modelling and data normalisation. Creation of logical data model. | FileMaker tip

Introduction to data modelling and data normalisation. Creation of logical data model. | FileMaker tip | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

...

It is the 101 of data normalisation.

Why do you need to understand data normalisation?

...

When talking with clients the concept of data normalisation is often seen as a black art.

We have to explain what it is all about, and involve the users in the process.

That involves some understanding of data normalisation and logical data modelling to make their contribution meaningful.

A secondary target is the person setting out to build their first database be it Microsoft Access, Filemaker or any other database solution.

Getting the data structure wrong means that no matter what else you do, the program is basically flawed.

The most beautiful, functional building will be unstable if the foundations are faulty.

FileMaker Data Modeling, Selector-Connector & Anchor-Buoy

FileMaker Data Modeling, Selector-Connector & Anchor-Buoy | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
The Selector-Connector is a data model for organizing your FileMaker table occurrence graph.

It is something we’ve been loosely collaborating on with our friend and colleague Todd Geist.

FileMaker Selector Connector: The Basics - SeedCode

FileMaker Selector Connector: The Basics - SeedCode | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
This post builds on the session I presented at DevCon 2015: Data Modeling Beyond Anchor Buoy which described the FileMaker Selector-Connector pattern for the relationship graph.

At DevCon we also went through some sample files which are available here in the “DevCon 2015 Demo Files” section.

We’ll reference those files in this article as well. (You can also think of this as a continuation of my the earlier post on Selector-Connector: “FileMaker Data Modeling with Selector Connector“.)

DevCon 2015 was an exciting time for the Selector-Connector Model as Todd Geist won the Excellence award for both developing and formalizing the idea.

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to collaborate with Todd as the idea was developing.

This collaboration lead to the current model used in our SeedCode Complete template, and was the basis of my DevCon presentation.

Why A New Model?
