Give life to your data with an easy to use database ... I'll share cool FileMaker stuff for you, avoiding the programming part of it as much as I can. #WorkplaceInnovationPlatform #Claris
FileMaker container fields are a useful, but complex function.
Uncover some quirks of containers and learn when and how to use them to improve workflows.
Since very early in its life FileMaker (perhaps even before it was FileMaker Pro) could store binary data (zeros and ones).
We have all kept things like pictures, movies, and eventually portable document formats (PDFs), Word documents, and even object linking and embedding (OLE) files on Windows.
If you can store it in a file, you can put it in a container field.
As FileMaker evolved over the years and embraced new technology trends, such as QuickTime and Adobe's PDF format, the container field capabilities have expanded to integrate the latest file trends with our data-driven workflows.
Let's explore some of the fundamental parts of setting up and using container fields.
We were recently working on a project where a container field contained a detailed image and thought it would be useful if the user could zoom in on some areas.
We (Beezwax) recently built an application that included PDF document management.
While it might seem as simple as a quick FileMaker container field, we wanted to impress our client with an integrated solution on par with a content management system (CMS).
Here’s how we built a powerful PDF viewer directly into FileMaker.
This “Tampered” error happens when an externally stored container image in FileMaker is altered by another application or operation outside out the FileMaker.
For example, you might go into the directory and resize the image.
It’s not entirely intuitive how you might get the image back.
There is a little FileMaker hack you can do to make your slide control seem like it has an endless amount of containers.
Thanks to Matt Petrowsky, from ISO FileMaker Magazine, for building a demo file called Endless Picture Sliders that allows you to have endless containers in a slide panel.
With the release of Claris FileMaker 19.5, there are some new functions related to containers that offer new ways to increase efficiency, accessibility, and utility in app development.
These new functions, CopyLiveText and ReadQRCode, offer the ability to parse out text and read the contents of QR codes.
Using these functions, users can implement image captions and image tagging for searching images, removing the need for complex integration solutions for the same text parsing purpose.
Let's take a look at some quick examples of what you can do with these new functions.
Feel free to follow along with the sample file provided at the end of this article.
Edit container field and external images directly in FileMaker.
Often container images within FileMaker need to be cropped, adjusted, rotated, colored, etc.
In the past, the only way to deal accomplish this was to copy the container to the clipboard and open in an app (like Adobe PhotoShop, Affinity Photo, or Lemkesoft GraphicConverter), edit the image, and then export as a file or copy paste the image back into FileMaker.
Drag & drop media files on a portal with clever functionality.
Containers made easy!
Everything you need when dealing with media files in your database: • A nice, big dropzone to add media. • A portal to display thumbnails, file names, and file size. • Buttons for preview, download and delete • A table with a complete set of calculated fields to extract useful data from your container;
Part 1 will cover the basics of container fields, storage of the container, performance considerations, setting containers to be interactive or non-interactive, and how it is backed up on FileMaker Server and FileMaker Cloud.

You’re storing lots of large images and documents in container fields and it’s getting harder to backup and restore. You’re also risking database corruption in transferring such a large file. What’s the best way to fix this?
You can use externally stored container fields.
That solves part of the problem of getting the actual file out of the main database file…but it is still time consuming to backup and transfer.
iSolutions created a demo showing a FileMaker custom app used as a Digital Set Manager. We call it the"'DAMO".
Leveraging FileMaker's native container storage we demonstrate how to store any type of binary asset as well as use FileMaker's logic to allow for asset assignment, check in and check out and approval.
The DAMO also shows how to identify users on login and take them to customized layouts, how to send emails from the app and how to access via an iPad.

For quite some time, most apps (Microsoft's Office suite, Apple's Pages, Numbers and Keynote suite, and the like) have included a wide range of free templates (or starters).

Using the iPad's front camera, our contact registration app included a "photo booth" feature which takes a "selfie" of the new contact and stores the photo in a round image container. The flaw Nicolas spotted was that the photos were not filling up the entire circle, they were inadequately cropped. Perfectly Round Photos Depending on whether the photo was taken in portrait or landscape mode, the contact's "selfie" would show horizontal or vertical gaps within the circular container field. The photos looked weird, like square pegs in a round hole.
Is your database becoming much larger than expected? Does the database use a lot of container fields? This could be caused by users scanning documents incorrectly.
I know what you’re thinking; this isn’t strictly FileMaker related. However I will explain.
A client contacted me recently complaining that the system I had written for him was too large and it was taking up too much disk space. This was supposed to be a small system, so it was an unexpected complaint.
After a very small investigation I found that the container data was using 200GB of disk space! This was due to users scanning documents to a very high, and unnecessary, quality. This made the scanned documents much larger than they needed to be and in turn, the FileMaker system.
FileMaker Pro is turning out to be a great document and image management system with some of the new features to do with Container Fields.
However there is one little annoying ‘feature’ holdover from previous versions —when using Drag and Drop of images from a Web Browser or Web Viewer (Sarari or Firefox) into container fields on a Macintosh, instead of an image showing up in the field, a text URL will be displayed.
The Solution: Fortunately FileMaker Pro also brought the very useful Insert from URL script step.
By employing a script trigger using the Insert from URL script step, the missing drag and drop functionality can be fixed.
