Fun with FileMaker Button Bars, Part 3: Tips for Designing Great Icons | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
In Part 1 (“Check Please,”) and Part 2 (“Expert Panel,”) of this series, we had some fun doing things with button bars that showed off some of their unique usefulness within the FileMaker design-layer toolbox.

Often as not, your button bars are going to include icon labels, with or without a supporting text label, and you want those icons to look great.

FileMaker Button Bar as Progress Bar | Soliant Consulting

FileMaker Button Bar as Progress Bar | Soliant Consulting | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
FileMaker 14 introduced Button Bars, which are basically layout objects that consist of segments that you can define.

In my experience Button Bars get used mostly for navigation menus.

I’m sure we will come up with all kinds of nifty ideas for areas they can be useful in.

This article’s purpose is to show you how you can use the Button Bars to show progress.

Button Bars and Icons « The Philly FileMaker User Group

Button Bars and Icons « The Philly FileMaker User Group | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

I am implementing a button bar interface for a client.  They need an in house ordering system.

Across the top of the layout there are 4 buttons.

Each button represents a step in the process.

I have decided to follow my own advice, and for this client, it made sense to create a tabbed interface using a Slider and Button Bar, instead of a regular Tab control.

The new button bar allows you to define a row or column of buttons at once, all with uniform size and formatting.

The bar is divided into segments, each of which contains either a regular button or a popover button (a single button bar can contain buttons of both types).

You also can designate one of the buttons as "active", typically used to show which button the user clicked last.

Button bars are ideal for navigation and also work well as a customized replacement for radio buttons or checkbox sets, for switching between tabs or slide panels, or anywhere else it makes sense to group buttons that have a similar function.

Each button can have a special icon associated with it.

FileMaker Go 14: Keeping Button Bars and Slide Panels in Sync

FileMaker Go 14: Keeping Button Bars and Slide Panels in Sync | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it
Someone recently suggested (a blog, at DevCon? Sorry I lost my source on this one.) using the combination of FileMaker 14’s new button bar with a Slide Panel to emulate a tab panel.

Why bother you ask?

Well you get the cool slide animation effect when using Slide Panels. iOS users are increasingly used to the idea of sliding things around on their screen.

Button Bars are cool because they take care of highlighting themselves (with a little help sometimes).

The advantage of using a Button Bar to emulate a Tab Label is that it gives the user more information about where they are on the layout.

The best of both worlds would be a Sliding Tab Bar.

We don’t have that yet, so here is how to emulate one.

Button Bar Tool | 1-more-thing - FileMaker

Button Bar Tool | 1-more-thing - FileMaker | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

ButtonBarTool is an invaluable time saver for FileMaker developers.

It saves a lot of tedious and repetitive tasks while working with buttons and button bars.

3 major features are included:

Duplicate: repeat one of the button bar segments as many time as you want. Including label, object name, script, parameter, conditional formatting, tooltip, hide condition, popover title… You can even use a tag in calculations that will return a sequential number.

Convert: create one single button bar with several button objects, and vice versa. Ideal when you upgrade a pre-14 solution to a more modern look and feel.

Combine: combine two button bars into a single. You’ll find yourself using it more that you would think

Fun with Button Bars, The Series

In recent years, design, has become such an important aspect of what we do; luckily FileMaker has responded with a much improved design surface.

With themes and styles, conditional visibility, SVG icon support, and new layout objects, we can now use design and color to communicate with users in ways not previously possible (see, for example, the “Priorities” example in the accompanying demo file).

When I first saw the button bar demoed, I was a bit underwhelmed. It’s not that it didn’t look potentially useful to have a new layout object type that keeps a group of buttons permanently joined at the hip, but that’s about all I thought it did.

Once I got my hands on them, however, I discovered the nuances that make button bars far more than just a permanent grouping of individual buttons.

This series will explore some surprising uses for which they’re particularly well-suited.

In the end, you’ll not only see how you can improve your users’ “user experience” (UX), but, by letting your design communicate effectively, possibly even their efficiency.

So, let’s get started learning some ways button bars can provide a better user experience in your solutions.

Alphabetic Search Buttons using Button Bars in FileMaker 14

Alphabetic Search Buttons using Button Bars in FileMaker 14 | Learning Claris FileMaker | Scoop.it

FileMaker Pro 14’s new button bar brings a new twist to an old technique for creating alphabetic searches of your data.

Instead of creating 26 individual buttons it is possible to create a single button bar object and then easily reformat it using text style changes or FileMaker CSS style changes.

The button bar can also be repurposed to horizontal or vertical layouts.

Finally I demonstrate how to use the same script from different contexts to perform different searches — a list search and a portal filter.
