EXPLAINING Bitcoin to the man in the street, sort of — Future of Currency — Medium

EXPLAINING Bitcoin to the man in the street, sort of — Future of Currency — Medium | Le BONHEUR comme indice d'épanouissement social et économique. | Scoop.it

I'm very curious about media interest in Bitcoin, which seems to have accelerated in the last couple of weeks. Last week, for example, I found myself being interviewed for the BBC's current affairs flagship "Newsnight". A couple of days later, this package appeared on the BBC News site. Here it is, in fact.

I forced my family to watch this. Afterward, my good lady wife (a lay person of great intelligence) told me that while she had enjoyed my performance on national television, "I know no more about Bitcoin than I already did - ie, nothing - and I really wanted it explained". All of the graphics about cryptography hadn't helped at all. That set me thinking about alternative ways to explain the technology. When I've tried to explain Bitcoin to lay persons before, I've not started off by talking about cryptography, I've started off with narrative.

[Germany ] Renewable Energy + Clean Power in Europe [Infographic] | Le BONHEUR comme indice d'épanouissement social et économique. | Scoop.it

Germany has become more than just a leader in standard renewable energy uptake; it is making a play for commercial leadership and technological primacy in the increasingly competitive global renewable energy business.

Companies understand their customers want to see more renewable energy in action, and German regulators understand that they need to find ways to put more renewable energy, including wind power, onto the grid to replace planned coal and nuclear power plant retirements.

In the continental context, the EU is preparing to release its latest communication on an integrated energy market ahead of a goal of operational integration it has set for 2014.

How a tough neighborhood is building a stronger future with vivid public art

How a tough neighborhood is building a stronger future with vivid public art | Le BONHEUR comme indice d'épanouissement social et économique. | Scoop.it

A thriving inner-city cultural environment contributes to a healthy economic and social environment, which in turn produces significant benefits to the things we value in our natural environment: this is because the most effective antidote to the kind of sprawling outward development that has consumed our landscape, polluted our waterways and escalated harmful emissions across the US over the past half-century is a strengthening of our existing communities.

We particularly need our inner cities to be the kinds of places that will be loved and will endure – that will literally be sustained - over time. The human ecosystem is complex and, while making it healthy also requires a lot of things besides art, a holistic approach to placemaking that includes a key role for culture – especially homegrown culture – is essential.

That is exactly what Philly Painting is doing. To date, it is the most ambitious of many great projects sponsored by Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program, the nation's largest initiative of its kind. Since 1984, the program has created over 3,000 murals and works of public art in the city, engaging over 100 communities each year in the process, according to its website. Mural Arts also sponsors free art education programs for youth, especially at-risk teens and, impressively, provides jobs to adult offenders in local prisons and rehabilitation centers, “using the restorative power of art to break the cycle of crime and violence in our communities.” If you are as interested in this sort of thing as I am, you’ll enjoy the program’s website, especially its sections on the program’s history and emphasis on community engagement.

Eight Fallacies about Growth

Eight Fallacies about Growth | Le BONHEUR comme indice d'épanouissement social et économique. | Scoop.it

"Our decision-making elites may tacitly understand that growth has become uneconomic. But they have also figured out how to keep the dwindling extra benefits for themselves, while “sharing” the exploding extra costs with the poor, the future, and other species. The elite-owned media, the corporate-funded think tanks, the kept economists of high academia, and the World Bank — not to mention GoldSacks and Wall Street — all sing hymns to growth in harmony with class interest and greed. The public is bamboozled by technical obfuscation, and by the false promise that, thanks to growth, they too will one day be rich. Intellectual confusion is real, but moral corruption fogs the discussion even more."

Herman Daly (ex World Bank) provides another must-read article on the fallacies of economic growth and explains why the potential for "decoupling" is limited and why economic growth has become "uneconomical".
