Extract: Arimathea by Frank McGuinness | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it

He came from out foreign and he spoke wild funny. All the older girls thought he was the last word from the day and hour they set eyes on him but they were stupid, and he would no more look at them than if he was the man in the moon. I don't know where that shower got the notion that he was the kind of fellow listened to the likes of them. Was it because of the way some of them sprawled in front of him, were they expecting him to draw them?

The Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature 2014

The Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature 2014 | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it
Last night 21st February, Professor Frank McGuinness was awarded the Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature. It was a truly remarkable evening, with great writers celebrating a great writer. In a touching and emotional speech, twice Booker nominated Sebastian Barry presented him with the award: FRANK MCGUINNESS PEN Lifetime Achievement Award 2014 By Sebastian Barry Now let me speak of the loveliest man I know. Most fierce in his work, most gentle in his life. This is a Lifetime Achievement Award and it is a lifetime since we first met. 1981. I was toiling up the stairs to the offices of Wolfhound Press in Dublin, wondering what awaited me at the top. There was an editor going to talk to me about two short novels, two very short and very un-commercial novels, that Wolfhound was nevertheless going to publish. I was 26 so I suppose Frank must have been…

The Hanging Gardens by Frank McGuinness

The Hanging Gardens by Frank McGuinness | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it
The challenge taken up by longtime collaborators Frank McGuinness and director Patrick Mason in stagingThe Hanging Gardens is how to stage a coherent representation of a failing mind. This is not a necessarily new challenge (King Lear comes to mind), but it’s certainly a worthy one. More and more of us are living longer and as such are increasingly susceptible to the extreme breakdown of both body and mind as we grow ever older. It’s almost certain most of us will be confronted with the loss brought on by dementia, either firsthand or by witnessing a loved one succumb. In McGuinness’s newest play for the Abbey several metaphors are staged in order to articulate this experience of loss from the viewpoints of both the sufferer of dementia and his family, and while not all these metaphors are successful in their execution, the overall effect is devastating.
