Help Students Learn Better With Different Types of Engaging Visuals | Emerging Education Technologies

Help Students Learn Better With Different Types of Engaging Visuals | Emerging Education Technologies | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Today, students have more homework than the generations of students before them.

They also have plenty of distractions in and out of the classroom like social media, social media marketers, online gaming and online streaming.

With countless distractions and piling assignments, holding students’ attention in the classroom can be challenging. Helping them to absorb and retain new information requires more and more creative approaches.

Research shows that presenting information visually makes a huge difference. Visual content gets processed faster and remembered for longer periods of time (as opposed to plain text). That’s why using visuals in the classroom is a great approach to helping your students learn effectively, and even enjoy what they’re learning.

So it’s time to step away from traditional teaching materials, and embrace an arsenal of visual content. Equipped with the right online design tool, you can create engaging visuals easily and without any design experience at all.

We’ll cover 10 different kinds of visuals that can help you engage your students in the classroom:

     * Process infographics
     * Informational infographics
     * List infographics
     * Comparison infographics
     * Research reports
     * Lesson plans
     * Mind maps
     * Progress reports
     * Charts and graphs
     * Posters"

Hi Steven, I agree that mind maps can be messy! They do not work for every kind of learner. I've only used them a few times and only as an option of ways to show understanding. I've found artistic students enjoy using them as a way to show their thinking. It is also helpful if there is a central idea like character connections or theme when using them in a English Language Arts classroom.

Hi Debbie, thanks for sharing the article. I prefer to learn things with visual help, the use of different visuals in the instructional design will be a great help for people like me. I enjoy making the visuals, but I found it time-consuming to develop and organize the learning contents when I design an online course, I think I need an infographic designer to work with me!

One of the most effective ways of taking existing content and turning it into a more visually engaging piece is through the creation of case studies.

Here Is An Interesting Tool for Creating Animated Visuals to Use in Your Class #Genial.ly | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Genial.ly is a good web tool you can use to create engaging visual content. It is somewhat similar to Thinglink we reviewed before. You can use Genial.ly to create interactive  presentations, educational posters, infographics, microsites, images and enrich them with a wide variety of multimedia content. The interactivity part is what gives your visual content dynamism and makes it engaging, For instance, you can create a classroom poster or an animated infographic where you embed interactive content such as  audio files, video clips, documents..etc which students can access with a single click. ‘You can even enrich your content with hundreds of external providers like Spotify, Google Maps, social media, Amazon, YouTube, the News, and more!’
