iPads, MakerEd and More in Education

Around this time five years ago I discovered that the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts free online art history texts. A recent Tweet from Open Culture reminded me of that collection. Today, I revisited that collection and discovered that it has expanded to 569 volumes. All of the books can be read online or downloaded as PDFs (warning, some of them are massive files). You can search through the catalog of books by thematic category, format, and publication type. And, of course, you can search through the books by title, author, and keyword.

This is the second post in a series of posts dedicated entirely to educational apps to use with high school students. The previous list was about math apps. Today's collection features a number of useful apps for teaching/learning history. While most of these apps cover world history in general few of them  are US specific.  You may want to go through the list and see which ones work for you. Links to the apps are under the visual. Here is a collection of some great iPad apps we compiled specifically for history teachers.  We have based our selection on World History collection in iTunes App Store and have also added some of our favourite titles from this category.  

Bottom Line: For flexible classrooms, creative teachers, and sharp students, Civilization V is the perfect platform for making rather than memorizing history.

You've read about the Holocaust in books and seen it portrayed in films. But it's another experience entirely to walk through the site of a concentration camp in virtual reality, led by a survivor who lost his entire family there. The Last Goodbye, which debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival this week, follows Pinchas Gutter as he makes his final pilgrimage to Majdanek, a former Nazi Germany extermination camp in occupied Poland. It's a trip he's made many times, but this one has a specific purpose: to capture his account of the Holocaust so we never forget that it actually happened.
