The future of #photography is a #camera made of #code - CBC.CA

The future of #photography is a #camera made of #code - CBC.CA | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Back in 2010, a team from Stanford University's computer graphics lab got their hands on a Nokia N900. It had a pretty good camera by smartphone standards at the time, but the researchers thought they could make it better with a little bit of code.

The Stanford team, led by professor Mark Levoy, was working on the cutting edge of a nascent field known as computational photography. The theory was that software algorithms could do more than dutifully process photos, but actually make photos better in the process.

"The output of these techniques is an ordinary photograph, but one that could not have been taken by a traditional camera," is how the group described its efforts at the time.

Fast forward to today, and many of the techniques that Levoy and his team worked on — yielding features like HDR and better photos in low light — are now commonplace. And in Cupertino, Calif,. on Tuesday, Apple's iPhone event was another reminder of just how far smartphone technology has come.

What we think of as a camera is largely a collection of software algorithms that expands with each passing year."

Mobile phone photography has made its way into the photography world. Early on, the phones were not equipped with great camera; however, today these cameras feature HDR and others features to create some fantastic photos.

A Better Way to Access the Camera from iPhone Lock Screen in iOS 10

A Better Way to Access the Camera from iPhone Lock Screen in iOS 10 | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Ever since Apple redesigned the iOS lock screen to remove swipe-to-unlock and require users to press the Home button instead, some iPhone users have discovered that accessing the Camera from the lock screen might be a challenge. The potentially difficult scenario is this; if you press the Home button to show the locked display which you would then swipe to access the iPhone Camera from, pressing the Home button also unlocks the iPhone and skips the lock screen with the camera access. I recently ran into someone who was convinced this set of actions meant their iPhone lock screen camera wasn’t working or no longer existed, so the behavior can lead to some degree of confusion as well.

Fortunately there’s a better way to access the iPhone camera from the lock screen in iOS 10 and newer, and it doesn’t involve using the Home button at all."

This is pure genius!!

3D Scanner Camera – How to Turn a Camera into a 3D Scanner - all3DP

3D Scanner Camera – How to Turn a Camera into a 3D Scanner - all3DP | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Occasionally, you might catch yourself wishing you had a digital 3D representation of a physical object. Maybe you’re making a replacement part for a broken tool, or designing a modern vase inspired by the organic form of a family heirloom. You could buy a 3D scanner for the job, but why invest in new equipment when all you need is a regular 2D camera, like the one you probably have in your pocket?

Creating a 3D scanner camera from one that takes 2D pictures is, in fact, possible – the key is angles, and lots of them. The process is straightforward: Download an app on your smartphone, snap many pictures of the same object from multiple angles, and feed them to some special software to produce a 3D design.

Of course, there are smaller details to consider in practice to optimize the scan, but the methodology is pretty simple.

Just to note, there are electronic devices on the market that work in conjunction with a smartphone or tablet to produce a 3D scan, but we’ll talk mainly about using a smartphone by itself to create a 3D scanner camera in this article.

Here's how to access the iPhone's hidden mode that turns the camera into a magnifying glass | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Apple included a nifty hidden camera mode in the latest version of its iPhone software, iOS 10.

"Magnifier" mode uses the iPhone's camera to magnify text or other small things — handy, especially, for reading fine print, or zooming in on small details.
