Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement

Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
In this first post, I’ll share some preliminary results about video usage, obtained from initial analyses of a few edX math and science courses. Unsurprisingly, students engaged more with shorter videos. Traditional in-person lectures usually last an hour, but students have much shorter attention spans when watching educational videos online.

Jim Lerman's insight:

There have been a number of studies I've come across that have come to this same conclusion that 6 minutes is the optimal length for student engagement with an educational video. Yet, educators' urge to "cover the material" seems to get in the way of keeping videos to this level of conciseness. Six minutes guys!!

Maggie Rouman's curator insight, July 4, 2016 1:36 AM
How long should educational videos be? Research says not longer than 6 minutes. Find out more here.

Experimenting with Facebook in the College Classroom

Experimenting with Facebook in the College Classroom | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
The next semester, I decided to embrace social media and created a Facebook page for the class, which was comprised of 25 students. It was actually fun and easy. In less than two hours, I had created a page with relevant material for the course. For the sake of privacy, I kept the class page separated from my personal Facebook account.

Project Based Learning Connects To Flip Learning… Plus Hundreds of Resources | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
Have you ever considered flipping your classroom and engaging students in Project Based Learning at the same time? As I study these learning processes I see possibilities that allow the two to not only coexist, but also complement each other. How might this work? They do share similar emphasis on higher order thinking skills. Another not so obvious way the two can complement each other is based on productivity and time. Let’s take a closer look.

Can You Flip an Online Class?

Can You Flip an Online Class? | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
One way to address this is to apply the flipped philosophy to the online classroom. The flipped classroom model can help us design more interactive and engaging online learning experiences, and online classes can help us expand on what it means to flip. Certainly there is something to learn by combining these two conversations.

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, July 1, 2016 4:11 PM

Phillip Morgan's curator insight, July 2, 2016 2:30 AM

The Educator’s Guide to Instagram and Other Photo Apps

The Educator’s Guide to Instagram and Other Photo Apps | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
I’m not the most dedicated Instagrammer (need to get out more) or the best photographer (wish I was) but like many other educators, I enjoy sharing my photos on Instagram.

Why?  It’s fun! Easy! I can quickly share photos taken on my iPhone when I’m out and about!  Or have fun editing photos and sharing from my camera on my iPad!  And in the process I’m learning more about photography, photo editing and other Instagram users.

Here’s my advice to help you get started or get more out of using Instagram.
