Bringing Water Closer to Home in Rural Communities in Tanzania

In rural communities in Tanzania, women and girls are most affected by remote and unsafe water sources as they are responsible for collecting water for their families. Restaurant owner Janet Robert couldn’t get more than 20 liters of water per day and that severely impacted her business. Through the Sustainable Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program for Results, Janet and more than 3.3 million people in Tanzania have gained access to safe water closer to their homes.

Graham Watson's insight:

There are a number of World Bank clips looking at the importance of fresh water and sanitation, and I think that this is the best of them, highlighting a project in Tanzania that has delivered safe water to rural communities, significantly enhancing their living standards.

New World Bank Country Partnership Framework for Tanzania

Over the past decade, Tanzania has registered significant gains in poverty reduction with the headcount poverty rate falling from 34 to 28 percent between 2007 and 2012. The World Bank Country Partnership Framework (2018-2022) will support Tanzania’s ambitious agenda for industrialization, economic growth, and human development as laid out in the Second Five-Year Development Plan and Zanzibar’s Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty.
Graham Watson's insight:
This World Bank clip quantifies the rapid development of Tanzania in the past decade, highlighting the improvement in a number of development outcomes. and the progress that still needs to be made to tackle poverty. It's a good country example of the nature of development, and how international efforts can help overcome some of the problems facing East Africa's largest economy.

Drones helping to understand flood risk in Tanzania

The Tanzania Urban Resilience Program is using an innovative combination of Light Detection and Range (LiDAR) UAV (or drone) surveying and bathometric surveying to support flood modelling within the flood-prone Msimbazi river basin. Outputs will be used to guide river upgrades that will improve Dar es Salaam’s resilience to flooding.

Graham Watson's insight:

One of my favourite areas - the intersection between technology and development is tackled in this World Bank clip that looks at the application of drone technology to help understanding flood risks in the Msimbazi Basin in Tanzania.

A great clip.
